The Centre for Centre for Justice, Law & Society (CJLS) undertakes cutting-edge legal empirical research on contemporary questions of sexuality, gender, public policy and health law. Our work is at the intersection of gender, power, sexuality, law and society with the vision to influence law and policy through research and consultations. CJLS adopts a multidisciplinary approach and focuses particularly on the rights of sexual minorities; gender minorities and gender diverse people; constitutional right to health and reproductive rights.
CJLS has published a number of reports and papers focusing on the LGBTI community, such as exploring the impact of the Naz Foundation decision, and analyzing transnational perspectives of issues relating to gender non-conforming persons. CJLS has also been part of multiple national consultations on transgender rights, made submissions for India’s UPR, and organized legal training workshops for transgender activists. CJLS has also contributed to contemporary discourses and activism around reproductive rights.
CJLS aims to use its position to engage in global-domestic research, dialogue, negotiation, and, when necessary, the judicial system, to achieve systemic reforms that advance social justice and equity in the many dimensions of health, sexuality, and gender.
