Biography

Somil Kumar is an Assistant Professor at Jindal Global Law School. He completed his B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from National Law University, Delhi in 2015. He then finished an LL.M. in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva where he focused on protection of vulnerable groups, human rights and climate change. He is currently looking for opportunities to finish his PhD in International Law alongside his teaching responsibilities at JGLS.

During his LL.M., Somil worked with three other colleagues to co-author a report titled ‘An Analysis of the Findings of the UN Human Rights Committee in 2016’ for the Centre for Civil and Political Rights, an NGO that works to improve the implementation of the ICCPR by promoting and enhancing NGO engagement with the UN Human Rights Committee.

In 2021, he worked at Migration and Asylum Project (M.A.P.), India’s only NGO that works with asylum seekers and refugees to assist with their status determination claims. As part of the Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) response team at M.A.P., he assisted in conducting research across different local and asylum-seeking communities in Delhi focusing on awareness of SGBV issues, related laws, institutions, and redressal mechanisms. He was also the co-author of the ensuing report titled ‘Sexual and Gender-based Violence and COVID-19.’ As part of his work at M.A.P., he also assisted asylum seekers with their refugee status determination claims before the UNHCR in India as well as to resolve other human rights issues that arose for members of these communities.
