Tony George Puthucherril is a Professor of Law at the O.P. Jindal Global Law School, India. He is also a Research Associate at the Marine & Environmental Law Institute at the Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University and a Senior Research Fellow with the International Ocean Institute, Canada. He is a member of the World Commission on Environment & Development of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Canada). He is a former Assistant Professor at the National Judicial Academy, India. A Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar, he holds a Ph.D. in Sea Level Rise, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, & Coastal Law and an LL.M. in Maritime Law from the Dalhousie University. He also holds a research-based M.Phil. degree in Water Law from the National University of Juridical Sciences, India. He has qualified the National Committee on Accreditation exams for international lawyers, administered by Canada’s Federation of Law Societies. Presently, he lectures on Property Law, Climate Change Law, Law of the Sea, Arctic Ocean Law and Policy, Water Law, and International Environmental Law. He is an internationally acknowledged expert in sustainable development law.

His research interests include the interface between Law and sustainable development, Law and governance in South Asia, Ocean and Coastal Zone Management law, Climate Change Law, Maritime Law and Water Law. He has been invited to present his works, among others, at the International Bar Association, the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, Wisconsin Law School, and the Oslo K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea. Among his publications, the two major ones are – “From Shipbreaking to Sustainable Ship Recycling: Evolution of a Legal Regime” (Martinus Nijhoff, 2010) , which has been acclaimed as “the work” on this subject and “Towards Sustainable Coastal Development: Institutionalizing Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Coastal Climate Change Adaptation in South Asia” (Martinus Nijhoff, 2014), “a book that should be read by coastal policymakers and decision-makers from all countries”.
