Biography

Prof. (Dr.) Subhrajit Chanda is widely regarded as one of the leading scholars and practitioners in the field of Sports Law and International Arbitration, with a reputation that spans India, Asia, and the global academic community. He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), O.P. Jindal Global University, and also holds the position of Assistant Director at the Centre for Sports Law, Business and Governance (CSLBG), JGLS.

In addition, he is the Faculty Coordinator of the Jindal Society for International Sports Law (JSISL) and the Faculty Coordinator of the Esports & Creation Society at O.P. Jindal Global University, actively promoting academic research and student engagement in emerging domains of global sports governance, esports regulation, and digital gaming law.

In 2025, Prof. Chanda made history by becoming India’s first Ph.D. holder in comprehensive Sports Law, having successfully defended his doctoral thesis titled “Sports Regulation in India: A Critical Analysis,” a full-spectrum legal exploration of Indian sports governance encompassing esports, betting, broadcasting, arbitration, and anti-doping frameworks.

A significant highlight of his policy and nation-building contribution is his role in the FICCI flagship knowledge report titled “Sporting India: Rising,” a comprehensive policy document examining India’s evolving sports ecosystem, governance structures, regulatory gaps, and pathways for sustainable growth. The report was formally launched under the aegis of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), with institutional participation and support from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) under the leadership of its President Ms. P. T. Usha, the Australian High Commission to India, the Indian High Commission to Australia, the Secretary of CBSE, and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The report has been widely acknowledged as a landmark policy intervention bridging sports law, governance reform, and international best practices, reinforcing Prof. Chanda’s role as a key policy voice in India’s sports governance discourse. (Report link: https://ficci.in/study_details/24215)

Prof. Chanda was also selected to represent India as part of the FICCI-coordinated Sports Law and Policy Delegation to the United Kingdom in 2025, under the leadership of the Consul General of India in Manchester. This prestigious international engagement focused on transnational collaboration in sports governance, legal education, and regulatory innovation. Furthering his international engagement, he has collaborated with the International Cricket Council (ICC) on advisory and research-driven initiatives relating to match-fixing, anti-corruption mechanisms, and integrity reforms within global cricket governance.

His academic leadership extends to his role as Managing Editor of the Journal of Sports Law, Policy and Governance (ISSN: 2584-1122) and as Founder & Editor-in-Chief of Global Sports Policy Review (ISSN: 2582-8886), the world’s first multidisciplinary journal dedicated exclusively to sports law and policy. Assistant Editor, Jindal Global Law Review (ISSN: 2364-4869; ISSN-L: 0975-2498).

Prof. Chanda has served as Visiting, Guest, and Adjunct Faculty at several reputed institutions including TransStadia University, Indian Institute of Management (Rohtak), Rashtriya Raksha University, Symbiosis Law School (Hyderabad), International Islamic University (Pakistan), University of Gonabad (Iran), among others. He also serves as the India Ambassador for ISDE Law Business School, Spain, actively fostering Indo-European collaboration in sports law education and professional training.

Academically, he holds an LL.M. in Sports Law from Nottingham Trent University, UK (awarded with an international scholarship), an LL.M. in Energy Law from the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, and a B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) with a specialisation in International Trade Law. He has completed over 33 international certifications and diplomas from bodies such as FIFA, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), UEFA, the UK Anti-Doping Agency, and the Open University (UK) in collaboration with the English Football League. He has also interned at the WTO Studies Centre, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), strengthening his expertise in global trade, arbitration, and dispute resolution.

A prolific scholar and thought leader, Prof. Chanda has authored and co-authored over 45 publications (and counting) across peer-reviewed journals, books, and edited volumes. His notable works include Sports Law and Policy in the Present Global Scenario and Handbook: Developing Sports Law in India: A Challenge Ahead, the latter launched by FICCI and the former Union Sports Minister of India. His scholarship has earned him editorial and reviewer roles with leading international journals, including The International Sports Law Journal (Springer) and The International Journal of the History of Sport, along with advisory roles at institutions such as GNLU, ILI, IFIM, and UPES Dehradun.

Beyond academia, Prof. Chanda has actively contributed to sports arbitration, governance reform, and institutional capacity building. He has judged, mentored, and guest lectured at numerous national and international moot courts and arbitration competitions, including SLAM, SAM, the International Football Arbitration Moot (Spain), and major conferences across India and abroad. He has advised on constitutional drafting for esports federations, integrity and anti-doping mechanisms, and collaborated with NAOS Simulation to develop the world’s first Sports Law Simulation Game.

Prof. Chanda’s personal journey is deeply rooted in sports and education. Born into a family of athletes in Kolkata, his father was a referee with the North Kolkata Referee Association and a retired Senior Superintendent of the Airport Authority of India, while his mother was a First Division cricketer with the Cricket Association of Bengal. Prof. Chanda himself represented the Eastern Region for the Sports Authority of India and served as a Sports Mentor with the Laureus Foundation and UK Government-led sports diplomacy initiatives.

Driven by a vision of building a globally harmonised, athlete-centric legal ecosystem, Prof. (Dr.) Subhrajit Chanda continues to bridge academia, policy, and practice, working toward positioning India as a global leader in Sports Law, Regulatory Reform, and International Arbitration through education, institution-building, and cross-border collaboration.
