Biography

Prof. Subhrajit Chanda is an accomplished scholar and practitioner in the field of Sports Law and International Arbitration. Currently an Assistant Professor at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), OP Jindal Global University, he also serves as the Assistant Director of the Centre for Sports Law, Business and Governance (CSLBG) at JGLS and holds the position of Visiting, Guest, and Adjunct Faculty at numerous institutions in India, namely TranStadia University, the University of Gonabad (Iran), International Islamic University (Pakistan), Symbiosis Law School (Hyderabad), Indian Institute of Management (Rohtak), Rashtriya Raksha University, and others. Prof. Chanda has been named the Indian Ambassador for ISDE Law Business School in Spain and is the founder of the Global Sports Policy Review, the world's first multidisciplinary sports e-journal, and Managing Editor at the Journal for Sports Law, Policy, and Governance.

He holds multiple advanced degrees, including an LL.M. in Sports Law from Nottingham Trent University, UK (secured with an international scholarship), and another LL.M. in Energy Law from the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, India. He completed his B.B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) with a focus on International Trade Law and is presently pursuing a Ph.D. in Sports Law. Prof. Chanda is certified in over 33 diplomas and certificates from renowned global institutions such as the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, UEFA, and the Open University, UK. Additionally, he has completed an internship at the WTO Studies, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), further broadening his expertise in international legal frameworks, trade agreements, and arbitration mechanisms. Prof. Chanda is also involved in NAOS Simulation, a global initiative for developing the world’s first law simulation game, contributing to international legal education.

In addition to his academic work, Prof. Chanda has been actively involved in the world of sports governance and law practice. He has served as a sports mentor for the Laureus Foundation and the Media and Sports Government, United Kingdom, contributed to sports policy development, and authored several significant publications, including the edited volume "Sports Law and Policy in Present Global Scenario" and the book "Handbook: Developing Sports Law in India: A Challenge Ahead," which was launched by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry) and former Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju of the Indian Rugby Federation. He also runs Sportiva Education LLP, an organization dedicated to the advancement of sports education in India, and acts as Assistant Editor for the Quarterly of Research in Exercise and Law Journal. He has also worked extensively in arbitration, dispute resolution, and intellectual property, specializing in sports arbitration and consulting on matters of sports law and governance. Prof. Chanda’s scholarly work has been widely published, and he has contributed over 30 research papers in the area of Sports Law.

His research contributions and advisory roles are further amplified through his positions as a reviewer for prestigious journals like the International Sports Law Journal and The International Journal of the History of Sport, along with several editorial board memberships such as those at GNLU, ILI, American Journal of Sports Science, Quarterly of Research in Exercise and Law, and Legal Spectrum Journal.

Prof. Chanda has also been interviewed by prominent platforms such as SuperLawyer, Sportsavour, and The Law Objective (Scotland-based), discussing his contributions to sports law and the broader legal profession. Additionally, he serves on various advisory boards, including the Centre for Sports Law at UPES, Dehradun, GNLU, IFIM Law School, Bangalore, and others, as well as numerous editorial boards, such as the Journal of Sports Law, Policy and Governance.

Prof. Chanda has been invited to several high-profile events, including a panel discussion on Sports Law and Governance at ICFAI University Dehradun and as a guest speaker and panellist at the International Conference on Sports Law and Practice organized by the Departments of Physical Education, Yoga, and Business Law at Saveetha School of Law, SIMATS, Chennai. He was a panellist member at the Bangalore Dispute Resolution Conclave organized by the School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, where he participated in the session titled ‘Demystifying Sports Arbitration: The What, Where, and How.’ Additionally, he has been invited to judge the preliminary rounds of "VYAPAAR: The Ultimate Pitch Battle," hosted by the Center for Innovation, Incubation, and Legal Entrepreneurship at Chanakya National Law University. Prof. Chanda was a speaker and panellist member at the 8th CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration at National Law University, Jodhpur, where he discussed “Beyond the Final Whistle: A Playbook for Sports Arbitration Success.” He has judged prestigious international and national competitions, such as the International Football Arbitration Moot in Platja d'Aro, Spain, both in 2024 and 2023, and the National Moot Court Competition at Amity University Rajasthan, Jaipur, in 2022. He has also judged preliminary rounds for the Intra Sports Negotiation and Mediation Competition at IFIM Law School, Bangalore in 2021 and other significant competitions across Indian law schools and international forums.

Prof. Chanda has been invited as a guest lecturer for various distinguished universities and platforms, such as Beyond Briefs Law Review and Chandigarh University. He is also slated to deliver lectures as part of the Crash Course on Sports Law organized by Lawists' Den and the TNV IIUI Chapter, Pakistan, and for the Course on Fundamentals of Sports Law by The Legal Voice, India. Furthermore, he has been invited to lecture at the Sports Law Lecture Series at Vinayaka Mission's Law School and has served as the Chief Guest Speaker for the Club of Law Students' lecture session on "International Sports Law & Governance." Prof. Chanda has conducted numerous guest lectures for institutions such as BML Munjal University, Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai, and Sandip University, Nashik, covering topics ranging from "Sports Contract: Intricacies and Challenges" to "Sports as a Means of Advancing International Development." In 2023, he was invited to deliver a lecture as part of the MEx Talk series at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut on "Sports Laws in India: Imperatives and Challenges."
Prof. Chanda’s leadership and contributions to the field of sports law and international arbitration are further evidenced by his extensive involvement as a judge and speaker in various national and international forums. His commitment to educating the next generation of legal professionals and his expertise in navigating complex legal frameworks make him a key figure in advancing sports law, arbitration, and governance on a global scale.

Prof. Chanda’s personal background is equally notable, with deep roots in Kolkata. His family, passionate about sports and education, has been a significant influence on his career. His father, a retired Senior Superintendent from the Airport Authority of India, was also a referee with the North Kolkata Referee Association, while his mother was a prominent cricketer in the First Division at the Cricket Association of Bengal; he himself played for the Sports Authority of India (Eastern Region).
