Prof. Shelja is an assistant professor at Jindal Global Law School. She holds both LL.B and B.Tech (Biotechnology) from Kurukshetra University and an M.Tech (Biotechnology) from D.C.R. University of Science and Technology. While pursuing M.Tech. she also worked as a teaching assistant under the TEQIP Assistantship Program. In addition, during this time she gained experience in the forensic laboratory (DNA Division) where she conducted kinship analysis. In 2017, she was invited by the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai’i as a visiting research scholar where she studied the Hawai’i chapter of “Innocence Project”. Here she worked closely to understand the U.S. courtroom examination of forensic experts in DNA-based exonerations.
Before joining as an assistant professor, she was briefly associated with O.P. Jindal University as an adjunct professor teaching courses in forensic evidence. During this brief association, she was awarded the Research Excellence Award (2018) for her co-authored article on the constitutional and fundamental rights of Leprosy Affected Persons. This article was able to successfully predict the decision of the honourable Supreme Court in Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy v. Union of India (2017). She has also worked as a consultant with biotech firms and other start-ups.
Her research interests include the intersection of law and science, especially biosciences. She is currently studying the philosophy of science and bioethics.
