Biography

Sanmay Moitra is a Lecturer at Jindal Global Law School. His research and writing focuses on doctrinal, theoretical, and contemporary issues of international law and international criminal law. He completed an Advanced LL.M. in Public International Law (cum laude) at Leiden University, where his dissertation developed a new theoretical framework for identifying customary international law in hard cases. He also holds an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from Georgetown University, where he was a Merit Scholar, and a BA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford, where he was awarded the Barron Scholarship.

Before joining Jindal Global Law School, he has worked on a wide variety of litigation before both national and international courts. He worked as a Research Assistant at Human Rights in Practice in The Hague where he contributed to strategic litigation on behalf of victims of torture before domestic and international courts involving issues international human rights law and international humanitarian law, torture, and international human rights law. Prior to that, he also worked at the Chambers of Senior Advocate Prashanto Chandra Sen, where he assisted on constitutional, commercial, arbitration, and international law matters before the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts. In this capacity, he was involved in a number of landmark constitutional litigations including In re: Article 370 of the Constitution, M.K. Ranjitsinh v UOI, and Ashok Kumar Sharma v UOI. He has also advised and assisted on several constitutional matters involving questions of international law, such as the challenge to the constitutionality of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the status of the Katchatheevu Islands under international law.

His work has been published in leading international law platforms such as Just Security and EJIL: Talk!, and has been referenced extensively including in U.S. Congressional Reports.
