Biography

Komal Mohite is presently a Doctoral Candidate at the Department of History and Classical Studies, McGill University, Canada. She has completed Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) degree from the Centre for Political Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Her MPhil dissertation titled Designated Sites of Political Agitation: A Study of Jantar Mantar Road, New Delhi deploys interdisciplinary research methods by drawing insights from Political Geography, Legal History, Urban Planning, and ethnography of Jantar Mantar Road to understand the lived experience of the protesters camping at the site, and offer context to their agitations.
 
Her ongoing PhD thesis broadly maps the process of transition to capitalism in India and its interaction with indigenous social system such as caste. The thesis explores caste-class interactions by focusing on the migration of formerly untouchable Dalit workers from Western India to the bourgeoning Bombay Cotton Textile Mills in nineteenth century. It analyzes the modalities through which capital mobilized and reconstituted archaic social formations such as caste to expand and deepen, capitalist social relations, in addition to identifying the distinctive elements of capitalist transformation in non-Western societies such as India.
