Biography

Mary Sabina Peters is a Professor of Law at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), O.P. Jindal Global University, where she serves as Programme Director of the B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) programme, overseeing curriculum design and academic delivery. Her work spans Oil and Gas Law, Energy Law, Environmental Law and Sustainability, an interdisciplinary focus shaped by earlier faculty positions at the School of Sustainability, XIM University, Odisha, and the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun.

Her research on the delimitation of Arctic continental shelf boundaries was published by the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, Office of Legal Affairs, in 2020. She has also contributed to the official guide to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's Water Convention, reflecting her continued engagement with international ocean and polar governance.

She serves as Lead Research Consultant on European Union-funded regional marine and environmental protection initiatives implemented through UNDP and UNICEF, and has directed sustainability projects in collaboration with the UN Global Compact and UNICEF.

She is an Executive Member of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association and has held the Global Diplomacy Fellowship and the CB Davidson Fellowship in Scotland. She has also received an Award of Appreciation from the City University of New York.

Professor Peters mentors emerging legal scholars through the American Society of International Law's Women in International Law Mentoring Programme, and has extended similar support through the Millennium Fellowship, ISNAD-Africa, the Lead Like A Girl Fellowship, and, most recently, the South Asian Climate Justice Fellowship (2025), organised by World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ) and Youth Action for Sustainable and Eco Nepal (YASEN).

Her research has appeared in journals including the European Energy and Environmental Law Review and the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy Law. She has also contributed book chapters to the Brill Encyclopedia of Public International Law in Asia and to forthcoming volumes published by Thomson Reuters.

She holds an LL.M. in Oil and Gas Law, awarded with Commendation, from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and a Ph.D. in International Law from the University of Azteca, Mexico. During her studies in Scotland, she interned with the Scottish Parliament on the coastal-access provisions of the Marine Bill.

In India, she assisted a Senior Advocate-on-Record at the Supreme Court of India with legal drafting and policy analysis, contributed to disaster-management law reforms at the Indian Law Institute, and worked on the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act, 2005. She has also delivered legal and sustainability training programmes for Maharatna and Navratna public sector undertakings and central government ministries, and has received special recognition from the Central Warehousing Corporation, Government of India.

Professor Peters began her legal education at the University of Kerala, earning both her B.A.L. and LL.B. degrees with First-Class. This foundation, combined with over a decade of work across oil and gas, energy and sustainability law, continues to inform her teaching, research and mentorship at JGLS.
