About the film:
This 2008 cult classic, 'Supermen of Malegaon', follows a subculture of sheer passion of filmmaking in a small town of powerloom workers in Malegaon in Maharashtra. Amidst economic distress and social cleavages, how does the spirit of truly independent filmmaking work itself through creativity and collaborative spirit of the subaltern classes, is dealt forcefully and playfully through this documentary. Sneha Khanwalkar and Hitesh Sonik have done the musical score for the film. It has won scores of awards across the world, including at the Asiatica Film Mediale in Rome, Asian Festival of First Films in Singapore, and screened at Silverdocs and Full Frame Documentary Festivals in the US, the Karlovy Vary in Czech Republic and IFFI in India. It was recently adapted in a Bollywood film, Superboys of Malegaon.
About the filmmaker:
Faiza Ahmad Khan is a researcher and documentary filmmaker based in India with an interest in community media and archival practices. Her works include Supermen of Malegaon (2012) on the
filmmaking subculture in a town of powerloom workers in India; When All Land is Lost, Will We Eat Coal? (2016) on a village displaced by coal mining in Central India; and Habitat 2190(2017) on how environment policies are deployed against migrants on Europe's borders. She has recently been working on how different knowledge practices, local observations, activism, policy, and law engage with the situated material conditions of nature.
