The ranking exercise is part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan initiative of the Government of India
The multi-disciplinary O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) has been awarded the first rank amongst 3,500 institutions in the Swachhta Rankings of all Higher Educational Institutions in India. The Rankings were announced at the Swachhta Ranking Award Ceremony held today at in New Delhi. The award was presented by Honourable Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Mr. Prakash Javadekar to Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor, O.P. Jindal Global University.
Based on marks obtained in the notified parameters, JGU was one of the 174 institutions all India and the only university in Haryana that was selected by the MHRD for field inspection. A three-member team then visited the campus and interacted on issues including overall campus upkeep, quality of essential services, greenery, waste disposal mechanisms, and extension work carried out by JGU in neighbouring communities.
Congratulating the University on the achievement, JGU Founding Chancellor, Mr. Naveen Jindal said, “It is a moment of great pride for all of us at Jindal Global University being awarded the cleanest University in India. We have always emphasised on the need for a clean campus and accorded highest priority and attention to cleanliness in all initiatives and institutions. I congratulate the team at Jindal Global University and everybody who contributed towards this achievement.”
The University promotes a sustainable approach towards maintaining the biodiversity and ecological balance on the campus. About 50% of the campus is green cover with more than 7000 trees. The campus also has vermicomposting and sewage treatment plant units to dispose waste in a sustainable manner. Solar power units make the university energy efficient. Upkeep and maintenance of all facilities is done on a regular basis.
Thanking the Founding Chancellor and benefactor, Mr. Naveen Jindal and the staff, faculty and students at the University for their outstanding contributions towards achieving this distinction, Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor, O.P. Jindal Global University said, “Today is a red letter day in JGU’s history. We have been recognised by the Government of India as the cleanest University in the country. This is a significant testimony to JGU’s dedication and persistence in creating a University campus that is world-class. For JGU, this has meant providing a physical environment that is socially and environmentally sustainable; inspires creativity; promotes collaboration and innovation; encourages a sense of inclusivity; and is a thriving home to a diverse community. This is a significant distinction for us and we need to work towards ensuring that we maintain this recognition and constantly live up to the expectations that have been generated by this award.”
Expressing happiness over this development, Registrar, JGU, Prof. Y.S.R. Murthy observed, “As an educational institution, it has been JGU’s endeavour to instil right values amongst our students. There is a need for enhanced awareness on issues relating to cleanliness and sanitation across the country. JGU will continue to strive for creating a change through sustained efforts.”
The Chief Administrative Officer, JGU, Lt. Gen. Kochhar said, “We are deeply committed to upholding highest professional standards in all areas including cleanliness. We are enthused by this recognition.”
