Brief description of the session:

This interactive workshop is for humanists curious about using intelligence tools for a digital project. Get hands-on experience using artificial and humanist intelligence to create, analyze, and visualize fuzzy humanities data. Along the way, you will learn useful strategies to harness the power of AI for your digital scholarship while staying true to the time-tested values of humanist inquiry. No prior experience is necessary, but a laptop or personal device is required for the interactive component. Human-centered, non-human inclusive.

Brief bio of facilitator:

Joost Burgers is an Associate Professor of English and Digital Humanities at James Madison University and co-directs Digital Yoknapatawpha – an interactive “deep atlas” of the works of William Faulkner hosted at the University of Virginia. He is also a Research Fellow at Ashoka University in New Delhi, India where he advises doctoral candidates. He works on translating literary narratives into disambiguated data that can be analyzed at scale using computational methods, which in his words, is "a fancy way of saying he reads books and plays around with computers." He is also the coordinator of the Digital Studies minor.
