Biography

Dr Shubhasree Bhattacharyya is an Academic and Artistic Researcher. She has 15 plus years of professional experience in Higher Education. As a Nippon Foundation Fellow, Shubhasree conducted ethnographic and archival research as part of her doctoral dissertation Rhythms at Work: Labour, Territoriality, and Sound Spaces in Kolkata, asserting an alternative conceptual framework of understanding urbanity through an interrelationship of work and sounds. During her PhD years Shubhasree ideated and co-created the UGC UPE multimedia website project: “Soundscapes of Kolkata” and a documentary film on work song traditions in collaboration with the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Shubhasree is the first academic researcher in India to have initiated a discursive-artistic sonic pedagogy in the Indian context from a comparative perspectival framework. Her work is situated at the interstices of humanities, social sciences, science, technology, philosophy, comparative methodology, and concepts. Prior to joining OPJGU, Shubhasree has worked with University of Delhi, Shiv Nadar University, Eenadu Journalism School and Ramoji Krian Universe at Ramoji Film City and as a researcher been associated with premiere institutions: Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Jadavpur University, India Foundation for the Arts, Archives and Research Centre for Ethnomusicology, American Institute of Indian Studies, Howard University, and York University. She is an alumnus and community member with the Nippon Foundation Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund Global Fellows Network. Shubhasree takes special interest in thought leadership and academic initiatives that are relevant and impactful to the contemporary needs of students and other advanced learners. She qualified the UGC-NET Junior Research Fellowship in 2006 and is currently exploring pedagogical limitations and artistic possibilities in the context of generative artificial intelligence and machine learning.
