(2022-2024)Vatsala Gaur
Vatsala interned at the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, Delhi in 2024 to understand the multifaceted strategies employed to manage and control HIV/AIDS in India. She gained a profound understanding of the operational challenges and successes in the fight against HIV, particularly regarding the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) and the management of HIV among pregnant women. Her work was primarily focused on conducting a secondary data analysis of the variables associated with unsuppressed viral load among pregnant women living with HIV in Andhra Pradesh. This task involved a detailed examination of key indicators such as socio-economic factors, healthcare access, and treatment adherence, and how they impact the effectiveness of ART and viral load suppression. The insights gained from this analysis were critical in identifying gaps in treatment and providing actionable recommendations to improve patient outcomes. She was also actively involved in understanding NACO's broader framework, attending critical meetings such as the SAMPARK 2.0 initiative, which focuses on bringing lost follow-up cases of HIV-positive patients back into care, visiting ART centres and participating in training sessions on integrated service delivery for HIV and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). These experiences highlighted the importance of a holistic approach to HIV care, especially the integration of HIV and NCD services, to address the overlapping risk factors and improve the quality of life for people living with HIV (PLHIV).
