Biography

Yasmine A. Shilla (she/her/hers) is a Lecturer at the Jindal School of Psychology & Counselling. A trained counselling psychologist, primarily working from the person-centred approach, and committed to providing psychological services to individuals, and groups, she previously had a private practice counselling clients in an urban setting and served as a wellness coach aimed primarily at providing mental health consultations to clients from corporate settings and to college students. Educated in her hometown of Guwahati, Shilla went on to receive a B. A. (Honours) degree in Psychology from the University of Delhi and then pursued a Master’s in Psychology at Gauhati University before she obtained a Master’s in Counseling & Guidance from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, USA.

Having taught Psychology at the master’s level and then to high school students for over a decade, Shilla has been in the current academic position for over 2 years. She has presented at various national and international conferences, including the American Psychological Association Convention in 2008 and 2010, the Annual InSPA (Indian School Psychology Association) International Conference in 2014, the Diamond Jubilee International Conference on Mental Health 2023, and most recently at the Asia-PLAT (Psychology Learning and Teaching) Conference 2024.

Shilla has also led training programmes for students, professionals, and laypersons to enhance their understanding and awareness of the different aspects of psychology, most recently a faculty development program on the Principles of Feminist Psychology. She has hands-on experience working in various organisations, acquiring clinical, research, teaching, and administrative experiences.

Her research interests are mainly in multicultural psychology, with feminist psychology and tribal mental health as her specialities. She is also interested in topics such as creativity, family influences, relationship challenges, trauma, the professional development of the counselling psychology speciality, somatic body therapy, and the mental health concerns of academics.
