The Jindal School of Languages and Literature (JSLL) is at the leading edge of the university’s mission to be a premier institution for the study of languages, literature, linguistics and associated cultural explorations. Using several languages is part of everyday cultural experience and helps us become known to ourselves and to others. It is common today to find people in India and elsewhere who are bi- or trilingual, who use a ‘global’ language as well as regional or local ones. If you are fascinated by words, texts and other forms of communication, and if you want to learn more about how different languages shape human understanding, then JSLL is the right place for you. As an undergraduate student, you could join our flagship degree programmes, BA (Hons.) English or BA (Hons.) English with Research. Or, if you are enrolled in another programme of the university, you could choose from among many exciting JSLL elective courses that run the gamut of knowledge/skill areas from English drama, poetics, linguistics, history of literature in English, comparative literature, genre studies (such as the graphic novel, SciFi), professional technical and writing, editing and publishing, translation studies, literature and cinema, and many more. JSLL offers instruction in languages other than English and gives you opportunities to appreciate cultural products of Spanish and other world languages.
By embarking on a degree programme in language and literature at JSLL, you will begin, or continue, a fascinating journey in which you learn about how language makes us who we are. You will achieve mastery of one or more languages and gain a deeper understanding of literature and other cultural products. These linked skills and competencies will open many career options to you. Your JSLL degree programme will not only improve your use of language but will increase your appreciation of literature and open your mind to drama, music, film and other cultural expressions. You will experience true cultural ‘immersion’. JSLL study programmes involve internships so that you acquire real-world experience and get to apply what you have learned in the classroom by working with an organisation or enterprise. You may also benefit from carefully designed Study Abroad programmes in dozens of countries and thereby use your language in ’24 X 7 mode’ among native speakers. The School sponsors special lectures, film screenings, poetry readings, Meet-the-Author sessions, and other cultural enrichment events year round for benefit of the whole university. Through the affiliated Office of English and Foreign Languages, students of JSLL can learn several foreign languages from expert specialists, access language self-instruction software of the Global Languages Lab, and benefit from writing and research services for improvement of their communication skills. Through work with faculty trained at the best Indian and foreign institutions, students in JSLL benefit from exposure to cutting-edge ideas and teaching methods, obtain sound mentorship and experience innovative research and professional practice. Students’ time in JSLL will pave the way for their professional success and personal satisfaction.
The Jindal School of Language and Literature promotes learning and research in areas of language, linguistics, literature and cultural studies not in order to separate them from other fields and activities of a university but to create an environment in which due attention is given to our cultural legacies and the products of human inventiveness. Language and literature courses matter in today’s world because they inculcate essential skills of communication and analysis of the human condition.
JSLL provides an environment for holistic study of languages, literature and culture with organic connections to other JGU schools and centres. Literature courses at JSLL gives attention not only to separate languages and their literatures but to comparative literature, world literature and cultural studies. JSLL faculty are accomplished, creative, research-active scholars who are devoted to teaching and the advancement of students, especially development of their communication skills and critical thinking capabilities. JSLL students will encounter not only languages and texts but other cultural forms such as performing arts and cinema. We are devoted to the proposition that language and literature ‘matter’ today more than ever for human fulfilment and a safe collective future.
