Devyani Gupta’s expertise is in global history, colonialism and the British Empire, inter-Asian connections and the Indian Ocean region, and South Asia. Dr. Gupta’s research emphasises the importance of intra-imperial networks, and throws light on entangled histories of communication, knowledge-transmission, and commodity exchange. Her current research projects focus on histories of postal communication, opium circulation, and networks of salt.

Dr. Gupta is currently a Visiting Fellow at the School of History, University of Leeds, UK. She is the Managing Editor of the Journal of Indian Ocean World Studies. She is also a research associate with the Centre for Global Knowledge Studies (Gloknos), CRASSH, Cambridge, and the Leeds Arts and Humanities Research Institute (LAHRI).

Devyani Gupta has taught at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the University of California, Santa Barbara, University of Delhi, and University of Leeds. She has designed teaching syllabi and pedagogical tools for the University of Leeds, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and the School of Open Learning, University of Delhi.

Devyani Gupta was previously associated with the University of Delhi as Lecturer (2021) in the Department of History. She was awarded the prestigious Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship (2017-21) at the School of History, University of Leeds. She was the Global History Research Fellow (2017) at the Platform for Global and Transregional Studies, and an associate of the Centre for Modern Indian Studies, University of Göttingen, Germany.

Devyani was the Commonwealth Scholar in History at St. John’s College, Cambridge (2011-16), and obtained a Doctor in Philosophy from the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge. Prior to that, Devyani completed her MPhil (2009-11) from the Department of History, University of Delhi.

Dr. Gupta has a long association with policy think tanks, the development sector, and the publishing industry. She has trained extensively in the traditions of performative and fine arts from Bhatkhande Sangit Vidyapith, Lucknow, and the National Museum Institute, Delhi, respectively.
