Biography

Dr. Debendra Sahu is an Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies and Assistant Dean for Online Programmes at Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA), O.P. Jindal Global University. Dr. Sahu is also the Student Success Coordinator for the master’s programme in International Relations, Security, and Strategy offered by JSIA. Besides, Dr. Sahu is an Assistant Director at the Jindal India Institute, a strategic think tank for ideationally and intellectually enabling India’s rise in the world. Dr. Sahu holds a Ph.D. in Japanese Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was a recipient of the Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan) fellowship to pursue research at the University of Tokyo. Dr. Sahu interviewed various high-profile dignitaries, including Mr. Shinzo Abe, the former Prime Minister of Japan. In 2014, Dr. Sahu was selected from India as a Program Associate for the Program for Human Resource Development in Asia for Peacebuilding commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. This program is implemented by the Hiroshima Peacebuilder’s Centre, Hiroshima, Japan, in order to strengthen civilian capacity in the field of peacebuilding and development. Dr. Sahu also contributed to the Japan-South Asia and Japan-Korean Peninsula segment of an illustrious database, “The World and Japan”, funded by grants-in-aid from the Ministry of Education, Japan and Japan Society for Promotion of Science.

Prior to joining Jindal Global University, Dr. Sahu worked at the University Grants Commission, the apex regulator of higher education in India, for internationalization of higher education and the implementation of the National Education Policy, 2020. Prior to that, he worked in a Japanese corporation as Director of research and acted as an interface for Japanese investment in India. He has been a part of various high-level delegations in India and Japan for promotion of investment in Odisha.

Dr. Sahu’s research interests span the fields of Japanese studies, international political economy, India’s domestic politics, and the Indo-Pacific.
