Centre for Migration and Mobility Studies ( CMMS)
Introduction
The Centre for Migration and Mobility Studies (CMMS) has a twofold purpose; to forge collaborations with international and local partners and carry forth grounded and policy-oriented research on issues pertaining to migration, forced displacement, refugees and asylum seekers. It is estimated that there are 258 international migrants globally (3.3% of the world’s population) and global displacement is at a record high with 40 million internal displaced people and more than 25.5 million refugees. India has one of the largest diasporas in the world, with more than 16.6 million people from India living overseas. With a deepening of globalization and transnational connections, migration has become an important contemporary reality and its social, cultural and political dynamics merit closer investigation and analysis. The Centre on Migration and Mobility Studies will seek to explore migration as a multifaceted process with important implications for evolving discourses and practices around development, citizenship and nation-states. CMMS will focus on issues of international and internal migration in the South Asian context and seeks to lead the way in creating an interdisciplinary and diverse network of scholars, community workers, policy makers and government officials to address the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly mobile South Asia.
