Being part of the first batch of JSES gave me the chance to help shape a new institution, from setting up the first Student Council to contributing to the curriculum. A simple request for a Marine Ecology module sparked a passion that led me to an MSc in Biodiversity and Conservation at Queen Mary University of London, where I researched the evolutionary ecology of sea turtles. I then gained fieldwork experience on chimpanzee behavioural ecology in Guinea. Now, as I begin my PhD on the evolutionary and developmental biology of sea cucumbers at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Naples, Italy, I look back at JSES as the place where my journey as a marine biologist truly began.
