Data in Development: Evolving nature and contexts

Dr. Kanhu Charan Pradhan, National Institute of Urban Affairs

This talk will explore the crucial role of data in India's development, emphasizing the significance of data-driven policymaking and its broader relevance to development research. Drawing insights from various projects, it will trace the evolution of data in welfare and policymaking—from traditional government efforts like the Census and National Sample Surveys to modern tools used for targeted scheme implementation, such as demographic data. Additionally, the talk will examine how alternative, non-numerical sources of information, such as Twitter and YouTube videos, can be leveraged to gain insights into specific areas of development research.
