Biography

Dr Sunil Kaul graduated from AFMC and joined the Army Medical Corps in 1983. He served in various capacities including regimental medical officer for counter-insurgency operations in J&K between 1990 to 1993. He also commanded military medical units before resigning his commission to work in rural areas of Rajasthan and then the northeast part of India. After his Masters in Public Health from London University, he returned to rural Assam and co-founded an NGO, the ant (www.theant.org), now a group of 5 organisations.

Sunil has lived in rural areas for most of his adult work-life. Besides being a trainer for Malaria, TB, Maternal and Child Health, he has been a trainer on NGO management, Legal Compliances and has mentored many NGOs in the northeast. He has been invited for many years by the GOI on Malaria and TB. He chaired the Assam working group on Nutrition in 2019 and trained medical college staff on the JICA supported Health System Improvement project since 2024. 

Sunil has also been the Advisor (Assam) to the Commissioners appointed by the Supreme Court from 2005-2017 on the Right to Food PIL. He was also the State Representative of the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights on the Right to Education. He also served as Development Advisor to the Chief of Bodoland Territorial Council in 2023-24.

Sunil Kaul has served on the Board of Public Health Foundation for India and as a member of the Executive Committee and Academic Council of IIPH, Shillong earlier.

Sunil has been an Eisenhower Fellow and an Aga Khan Scholar.
