Professor (Dr.) Ian Pickup is Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Students) at The Open University, supporting the university’s mission of enabling all students to achieve their academic and life goals. Ian’s responsibilities include student voice, student engagement and satisfaction, student experience, and the delivery of high-quality student outcomes.  He has oversight of student employability, the Access, Participation and Success Strategy (including the Access and Participation Plan (APP)), the Teaching Excellence Framework  (TEF) and Quality Monitoring and Enhancement (QME). Ian is a passionate advocate for the role that universities play in society; originally a ‘first generation’ student, he understands the transformative potential of higher education.  He gained a BA (with QTS) from the University of Warwick and holds a PhD in Education from Roehampton University. He is a National Teaching Fellow, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is Professor of the Student Experience in Higher Education. Ian also has several external roles in higher education, sport, and the charity sector. He is a member of the Disabled Student Commitment Advisory Group, and a trustee of London Youth Rowing, a charity using the power of sport to change lives.
