JGU has been selected as an ‘Institution of Eminence’ (IoE) by the Government of India. JGU is one of only 8 private universities in India to be awarded this status. In addition, there are two yet to be established private institutions, which have been given this status. This is a historic milestone in JGU’s history and a testament to all of its faculty, students and staff efforts over the past ten years to build a truly world-class university in India that can serve as a model higher education institution in the country.
The IoE proposal is part of a major policy initiative promoted by the Government of India that aims to foster excellence in Indian higher education by identifying a group of public and private universities and higher education institutions that have potential to break into the top 500 of the global university rankings and maintain and improve their world ranking over time. While public institutions designated as I0E will receive government funding to upgrade their current standing, private institutions will be exempted from existing regulatory frameworks in order to allow for greater autonomy in offering academic programmes, designing of curriculum, broadening internationalisation efforts and in undertaking other institutional activities that will promote higher education excellence.
