JGU Recognised as ‘Swachhta Action Plan Institution’

The Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, has awarded a certificate to JGU recognising it as a ‘Swachhta Action Plan Institution’. It acknowledges JGU’s long-standing commitment to promote the practices of Swachhta and reduction, reuse and recycling of resources amongst faculty, students and communities. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has been recognising JGU’s Swachhta initiatives and placing it in top position through its Swachhta rankings.

This recognition is a testimony of JGU’s efforts and the trust reposed by external agencies in the university’s Swachhta Initiatives.

Some of the key objectives of the Swachhta Action Plan (SAP) are: Provide guidance to institutions on various aspects of Swachhta for a clean and green campus through a use of a standard operating manual; build Swachhta skills in students and ensure they take ownership of maintaining Swachh campuses; ensure Swachh campuses through use of the Swachh Campus Manual; promote healthy competition between institutions to maintain Swachhta ratings; and contribute to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by building awareness in universities/colleges through celebration of various days throughout the year.

JGU’s commitment to the SAP would help it remain focused on its goals to ensure Swachhta as an integral part of the functioning of JGU; take corrective actions and achieve higher benchmarks; and build Swachhta skills in the JGU community and ensure that we take ownership of maintaining a Swachh campus, which ultimately contribute positively to attain Sustainable Development Goals related to environment and health such as Goal 3: Good Health and Well Being, Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

As an Institution of Eminence, it has been JGU’s endeavour to achieve social impact through such sustainability initiatives and address issues of concern to developing societies. JGU provides student amenities comparable with that of globally reputed institutions. The community sanitation initiative of JGU under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan has been mobilising students and encouraging them to work in the villages adjoining its campus. A committee comprising Professor Ajay Kumar Pandey, Professor and Executive Director of Clinical Programmes, JGLS; Professor Amit Lahiri, Chief Sustainability Officer of JGU and Associate Professor, IIHEd; Professor Deepak Maun, Assistant Professor, JGBS; Mr. Ashish Kaul, Additional Director, Infrastructure, JGU; Ms. Hemlata Verma, Deputy, Chief Operational Officer of JGU; and Ms. Yukti Kumar will lead JGU’s Swachhta initiatives and will implement the SAP.
