Prof. (Dr.) Priya Kanungo has an MA, MPhil and PhD in Hindustani Music from Delhi University. She teaches Music and Writing at JSLH. Her thesis is on “Role of Criticism in Performing Arts, with reference to Hindustani Music”, where she brought together her experiences as a print journalist covering art and culture, with her practice and research in music. She has also been awarded the National Talent Scholarship for Vocal Music by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Dr. Kanungo has been a visiting faculty at Yale University and Ashoka University, where she taught introductory courses in Indian music.
After getting a BCom (H) degree from Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College and a BA degree in Hindustani Music (Vocal) from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Dr. Kanungo worked as a staff writer and journalist with newspapers such as The Economic Times, Hindustan Times, Business Standard and The Financial Express. She was also Advisor, DD Bharati, a Doordarshan channel on culture, where she produced and anchored a weekly, profile-based program.
While studying and working, Dr. Kanungo also trained in the practice of vocal music under Pt Deepak Chatterjee of the Sahaswan Gharana, Pt. Damodar Hota of the Gwalior Gharana, Shubha Mudgal, and Pts Rajan and Sajan Mishra of Banaras Gharana.
