Prof. Sriti Ganguly is a researcher interested in understanding educational realities in the urban context. Her doctoral research, from Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, focuses on differentiation and distinction among the urban poor of Delhi and explores whether education becomes a marker of difference and distinction. She had completed her MPhil from JNU on caste based segregation in Indian cities and how a segregated settlement shapes the worldviews of its inhabitants and in turn is shaped by them.

Some of her publications include: A Special Article titled “Socio-spatial Stigma and Segregation: A Balmiki Colony in Central Delhi” (Economic and Political Weekly) and “Social Construction of a Segregated Urban Space and its Effects on Education: A case study of the Balmikis of Delhi” (Contemporary Education Dialogue), “Widening Marginality in Access to Primary Education in Tribal Areas: Impact of School Closures and the Policy of Rationalisation” (International Journal of Indigenous & Marginalised Affairs). She has also contributed to the development of course material for Introductory Sociology course of Bachelors in Sociology, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. Her contribution also includes a chapter to a forthcoming volume titled Beyond Consumption: India’s New Middle Class in Neo-liberal times (under contract with Routledge).

She has worked on a project with the Save the Children on School Closures and Mergers, mapping its impact on school going children from marginalized communities in three different states of India (Rajasthan, Telangana and Odisha), which involved extensive fieldwork in diverse geographic, linguistic and socio-economic contexts. She also had a brief stint with Butterflies, a non governmental organization, in the year 2010 where her work involved research on the status of street and homeless children in Delhi.
