JSAA talk by Ravikant Kisana (also known as Buffalo Intellectual) on the topic, "Modernity Upside Down: Rethinking Caste and Nation" Modernity, as a construct of the post-industrial age, is often understood as an assemblage of interlocking institutions—economic, social, and political. In South Asia, particularly India, the cultural weight of caste obstructs and frequently inverts institutional development, shaping them to reproduce caste morality and privilege. While much scholarship on caste has examined oppression, this talk shifts focus to the structures of caste privilege—tracing how privilege not only persists but leaks upwards, consolidating at the top of the caste order.
