Biography

Dr. Shahim Abdurahiman M holds a PhD in Architecture and Planning from NIT Calicut, which focussed in the domain of urban conservation. His academic journey includes a M.Arch degree specialized in Architecture Conservation from SPA New Delhi (2015-2017), where he was a Gold Medalist, and a B.Arch from NIT Calicut (2007-2012). He is a registered architect with the Council of Architecture (CoA)- India since 2012. Recognized for his accomplishments and commitment to architecture, he was honoured with the Young Architect Award in 2014 (Malayala Manorama Parpidam) and his architectural and interior works were shortlisted for the IIA National Awards in 2018. He is an active associate member of the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) Calicut Centre, ICOMOS India, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), and the Indian Conservation Architects’ Community (ICAC).

He has garnered extensive professional experience through his involvement in various architectural and conservation projects. At De Earth Calicut, he contributed to various residential, commercial, institutional, hospitality, interiors, and urban design projects. Notably, he was part of the Fort Kochi 30-Year Vision project, a collaboration led by INI Design Studio in consortium with Space A.R.T and De Earth. Additionally, he served as a Conservation Architect for the Thalassery Heritage Project emphasizing the preservation and revitalization of historical and cultural assets. He was an active team player at De Earth for the Calicut Beach Development Project. He also served as an associate architect for various consultancy projects undertaken by the Department of Architecture and Planning at NIT Calicut – notably being the urban revitalization of Kuttichira and Tali tank precincts. Currently, he also runs a freelance practice, Brown Caravan, focusing on residential architecture, heritage conservation, documentation, and research. He honed his skills through internships at Jaff Design Studio (JDS), under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Jaffer AA Khan, and with the Indian Heritage Cities Network (IHCN-F) in Mysore, working under Ravindra Gundu Rao.

His teaching approach emphasizes critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and practical application, preparing students to excel in their professional careers. He envisions a dynamic and progressive academic environment where innovation and excellence thrive. He is committed to fostering a culture of academic excellence through innovative teaching methodologies, research-driven learning, and enhancing curriculum design, believing that a visionary and dynamic faculty can inspire positive transformations within an academic institution. He has several research papers and book chapters published in renowned Scopus and Web of Science indexed journals and books. He has also served as jury panel member at various architectural colleges.
