JGU, an Institution of Eminence, has established its 11th school, the Jindal School of Languages and Literature (JSLL), a significant step given JGU’s focus on the core areas of study in humanities and social sciences and languages, including literature being a critical component to all other areas of study.
Professor (Dr.) Denys P. Leighton has been appointed as the Founding Dean of the JSLL and he will be joining JGU in Fall 2021. Originally trained as a historian, Professor Leighton holds degrees from the University of Virginia (B.A.) and Washington University, St. Louis (MA., Ph.D.), has studied at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (Germany) and was a Middle Common Room Associate of Mansfield College, University of Oxford, while pursuing his doctoral research on the Oxford philosopher T. H. Green and Victorian liberalism.
In a career spanning more than thirty years, Professor Denys Leighton has held faculty positions in eight higher education institutions in the USA (community colleges, liberal arts colleges, research universities) and India and has lectured at nearly a dozen other colleges and universities across India and the world. Professor Leighton has spent the last more than a decade in India pursuing his teaching and research.
JGU will benefit from his impressive faculty expertise in language learning, literary arts, media studies and creative writing, all of which will be crucial to the development of the new School.
JSLL aims to promote the study of languages in all its forms and manifestations. JSLL, through its undergraduate and masters’ degree programmes, will prepare the students to be intellectually reflective, historically and culturally aware, in a diverse and rapidly changing world. It will commence the first academic session in Fall 2022 by offering two-degree programmes: B.A. (Hons.) degree in English and B.A. (Hons.) degree in Spanish.
