JGU-UNESCO hosts World Youth Conference on Kindness

The UNESCO World Youth Conference on Kindness to promote the SDGs was inaugurated on 20 August 2019 at JGU. As part of the partnership between JGU and UNESCO-Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP), 10 JGU students received a blended-model training (online & on-campus) along with 50 other national and international participants to promote SDGs.

The inaugural session was on Reflections on the first UNESCO World Youth Conference Theme“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” by Dr. Anantha K. Duraiappah, Director, UNESCO-MGIEP. The welcome remarks to the participants was given by Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, JGU and introductory remarks by Professor (Dr.) Y.S.R. Murthy, Registrar, JGU.

 

On 23rd August, the conference was held at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi with eminent speakers. Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Hon’ble President of India, was the chief guest. The World Youth Conference concluded with a concert by Grammy award-winning singer and environmentalist, Ricky Kej and Grammy winning singer, Laura Dickinson at Dogra Hall, IIT Delhi campus.  

The key themes of this conference were: Compassionate Integrity; Prevention of Violent Extremism; Understanding Kindness; Media Literacy; and Social Media for Social Good

Through this international conference, the participants were expected to: Develop key skills in social and emotional learning such as self-cultivation, relating to others and engagement in systems to develop compassion and kindness towards self, others and the environment; Understand the role of education in prevention of violent extremism; Gain new insights into the neuroscience behind kindness and develop an understanding of the role of media for social good as well as develop new skills like photography; and Learn the use of innovative life maps for active youth  engagement.
