JGU organised a conference on ‘The Future of United Nations’ on 20 February 2019 at JGU. Experts who attended the conference pressed for a more proactive approach from the the United Nations in order to end violence and forced displacement which would include restructuring of the Security Council and norms for grant of veto power.
The guests of honour were: Dr. Sukehiro Hasegawa President, Global Peacebuilding Association of Japan; Former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Timor-Leste; Mr. Virendra Dayal, Former Chef de Cabinet to the Secretary General of the United Nations; Ambassador Mr. Chinmaya Gharekhan, Former Permanent Representative of India to the UN in Geneva and New York; and Ambassador Mr. Kamalesh Sharma, Former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Timor-Leste.
The distinguished speakers included: Dr. S.M. Sharei, Executive Director, Center for UN Constitutional Research, Brussels, Belgium; Dr. Archna Negi, Associate Professor, Centre for International Politics, Organization & Disarmament Jawaharlal Nehru University; Ambassador Mr. Dilip Sinha, Former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations; Professor C.S.R. Murthy, Professor & Chairperson Centre for International Politics, Organization & Disarmament Jawaharlal Nehru University; and Ambassador Ms. Neelam Sabharwal, Former Ambassador of India to the Netherlands.
