Gowthaman Ranganathan engages in critical legal scholarship and his work examines the material impact of the law on people marginalized on account of their gender, sexuality, caste, and mental health. He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Family Law; Law and Justice; and Social Justice Lawyering at the National Law University at Jodhpur and Delhi. Previously, he has worked with the Alternative Law Forum, Bengaluru; the Centre for Social Justice, Ahmedabad; and the office of Advocate Sudha Ramalingam at Chennai. As a human rights lawyer, he has worked extensively on the rights of transgender persons and on advocacy and litigation to decriminalize homosexuality in India. He has provided legal assistance and representation to survivors of domestic violence, LGBT persons, and sex workers in Bengaluru and Chennai.

He holds graduate degrees in law from the University of Texas School of Law and the Azim Premji University. At the University of Texas, he was a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar and was also a Human Rights Scholar at the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice, and an M.D. Anderson Research Fellow at the Institute for Transnational Law. His undergraduate law degree is from the National Law School at Bengaluru. He enjoys cycling and scribbles poetry in his spare time.
