Brown Bag Research Webinar on the topic: "The Role of Income Inequality in the Relationship Between Population Aging and Inflation in Emerging and Developing Economies". This study investigates the interplay between population aging, income inequality, and inflation across 111 countries—focusing on 95 emerging and developing economies (EMDEs) from 1990 to 2023. It finds that population aging becomes deflationary under conditions of high income inequality, with results remaining robust across alternative measures and estimation methods. The study explores both economic and political mechanisms, showing that low fertility and population growth amplify deflationary pressures, while countries with higher democracy indexes pursue policies that stabilize prices for older populations. Policy insights include raising the retirement age and enhancing income equality to mitigate deflationary trends and support sustainable development goals.
