JGU delegation participates in “Times Higher Education Emerging Economies Summit” in Rabat


As part of JGU’s ongoing efforts to expand and explore new international collaborations with universities in Africa and the MENA region, a JGU delegation participated in the Times Higher Education Emerging Economies Summit in Rabat from 8 – 10 May 2018. Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences makes key presentation on justice for refugees and migrants at United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Vienna


Professor (Dr.) Sanjeev P. Sahni, Principal Director, Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS) made a key presentation on ‘Educating for Justice for Refugees and Migrants: A Global South Perspective’ as part of an event organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Vienna from 14-18 May, 2018. In his presentation, Dr. Sahni stressed on ‘social acceptance’ being a key stepping stone to integration of refugees and migrants: “Integration is a multi-group responsibility involving the host government, non-governmental organizations, communities and local residents.”

The event has taken place at a time when there are about 65.6 million people who have been forcibly displaced worldwide out of which 16.1 million refugees are registered with the UNHRC and 5.2 million with UNRWA. A large number of these refugees are under the age of 18 years.

JGU is the only Indian university to have been invited to participate in the event.

Chancellor Naveen Jindal inaugurates Olympic size swimming pool at JGU


In order to provide state of the art infrastructure to the students and staff of JGU, an Olympic size pool was inaugurated by Mr. Naveen Jindal, Founding Chancellor, JGU on 14 May 2018 on the JGU campus.

Speaking on the occasion, he threw some light on the importance of fitness and how swimming can help achieve the same. He also appreciated the core team, the architects and the workers who contributed in the construction of the swimming pool.

JGU launches Jindal School of Art & Architecture


Jindal School of Art & Architecture (JSAA) was launched on 15 May 2018 with a symposium on “The Affective Lives of the Built Environment” held in New Delhi. The panel consisted of Dr. Annapurna Garimella, Head, Jackfruit Research and Design; Prof. A G Krishna Menon, Co-founder, TVB School of Habitat Studies, Delhi (now Architecture School of Indraprastha University); Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Arif, Associate Professor in Sociology, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi; Prof. (Dr.) Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi, architectural historian and postdoctoral fellow in the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University; and Professor (Dr.) Thomas Mical, Founding Dean of the Jindal School of Art & Architecture; and others.

Jindal School of Art & Architecture is founded with the vision to become one of the foremost schools of learning of the visual, material and the built environments. JGBS launches Jindal Social Enterprise Network


Jindal Global Business School (JGBS) launched the Jindal Social Enterprise Network (Ji-SEN) on 7 April 2018 in the presence of leading names from the industry and NGO sector. Ji-SEN aims to work towards sustainable development with contributions from all stakeholders.  The day of the launch was also marked by a talk on ‘Running Your Career Marathon’ with Mr. Suresh Narayanan, Chairman and Managing Director, Nestle India Limited.

Ji-SEN already has renowned partners including Help Age India, Akshaya Patra Foundation and collaborations with top international educational institutes. It aims to strengthen the network of likeminded bodies from different sectors to create a knowledge and idea sharing platform. With emphasis on fostering strategic interactions, the network will support social enterprises in enhancing their reach and quality with sustainable initiatives that are the need of the hour and can bring about empowered change in society.

While very few B-Schools in the country have been part of such social partnerships, JGBS has a clear vision and dynamic agenda for Ji-Sen. It will offer training, certification programmes, and internship opportunities for students. Social internships will bring much needed trained manpower and professional experience to projects. The network also plans to set up an incubation center for social startups. With academic experts and industry leaders on board, it will be able to provide the know-how to ensure the success of the projects.

One such industry pioneer, Mr. Suresh Narayanan, was present for the launch of the network. He has over 35 years of experience in the industry that includes senior and top leadership roles with international brands in India and abroad. Mr. Narayanan began his talk by saying, “I am an accidental corporate citizen, I wanted to be a bureaucrat. In my days at Delhi School of Economics, Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUL) came to campus for placements. I wanted to go for IAS.  But my father advised me to sit for the HUL interview as it will be good practice for the IAS interview. I made it through. People advised me to go for it. I was the only non-MBA in my team.”

With the reassuring start, he went on to share his experiences working in Thailand, Egypt and Singapore. His experiences led him to build long standing relationships, which Mr. Narayanan believes are the backbone to long term career success. He then shared his twelve mantras of success with the audience. “Your education has won you half the battle by getting you into the finest universities. What will be important is the power of education.”

To budding managers filled with anxiety, his advice was to stop connecting the dots, “All jobs are both routine and exciting, embrace it.” Mr. Narayanan also asserted that professionals should not try and please everyone. “Seek happiness and not success all the time; otherwise you will be filled with hollowness. There should be no stopping you from conquering the world, but have fun while doing it,” he said to a round of applause.

Known as the man who brought Maggi back, Mr. Narayanan addressed questions on how he tackled the Maggi crisis situation. “A leader doesn’t have solutions to all problems; he or she asks the right questions and nurtures people, giving them hope. Leadership is about getting things done,” he said concluding his invigorating and high energy talk, which was the perfect launch for Ji-SEN.

JGU conducts course on South Asian history in collaboration with Lahore University of Management Sciences, Pakistan


Dr. Pallavi Raghavan, Assistant Professor, JGLS co-taught a course on South Asian history with Professor Ali Usman Qasmi from the Lahore University of Management Sciences in Pakistan. Students from both JGU and LUMS, Lahore participated in the course which included not only classroom teaching but also field visits to monuments in Delhi and active discussions on relevant historical topics for India and Pakistan including ‘Beyond India and Pakistan: Changing the Foundations of South Asian History’; review of the controversial movie ‘Padmavat’ by a Pakistani student and many others.

JGLS hosts first workshop of the Indian Feminist Judgments Project


Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) hosted the first workshop of the Indian Feminist Judgments Project (IFJP) from 14-16 May 2018 in collaboration with National Law University, Delhi in Qutub Institutional Area, New Delhi.

The workshop was launched with an opening keynote by Justice Gita Mittal, Acting Chief Justice, Delhi High Court. The IFJP is inspired by similar sister projects in other jurisdictions and aims to rewrite judgments that could benefit from a feminist reading. The Project imagines the possibilities of collaborative writing of alternate judgments for several Indian cases across a broad range of legal issues having a significant bearing on women. The central attempt will be to rewrite court judgments that could have been written better or written differently by using a feminist lens.

In addition, an exhibition, supported by Zubaan, was also organised on the University campus. The exhibition relived/recreated certain moments that are pertinent for India’s feminist history. The idea was to celebrate this collaborative effort as a reminder of historical efforts towards creating a more equitable and better world. The exhibition included:

  • The Poster Women series from Zubaan
  • The Mathura Wall – a reminder of the founding moment of the struggle against sexual violence which continues unabated till today.
  • Excerpts from Judgments as illustrations of how not to write judgments.
  • A visual experience of various feminist work, movements and interviews.
  • Artwork by JGU students guided by Dr. Mani Shekhar Singh
  • Prof. Pratiksha Baxi’s personal collection and her Research “Insignia and Images of Justice: Politics, Law and Visual Culture in the age of Globalisation, UPOE Project”, JNU, 2015-2017 with Prof. Jayati Srivastava, CIPOD, JNU.

JGU launches Jindal Initiative on Advocacy and Litigation


JGU launched the Jindal Initiative on Advocacy and Litigation (JiAL) to promote litigation as a career among law students. The First Litigation Summit was focused on creating awareness and knowledge about litigation as a career among students and to prepare young lawyers for a straight path, from “Campus-to-Court”. The Summit aspired to inaugurate the Litigation Module and collaborate with lawyers from across the country and bring them together to interact and engage with JGU students, enabling them to create a radical impact in the field of litigation in the academic space.

The launch event was accompanied by a panel discussion that included:

JILDEE conducts executive education programmes for public sector officers


Jindal Institute of Leadership Development and Executive Education (JILDEE) started the 2018-19 training year with one programme in April and four programmes in the month of May. Two programmes on “Women Empowerment” were conducted for all-India female employees of the Power Grid Corporation of India. The programmes were in Shimla and Jim Corbett National Park from 5-7 April and 3-5 May 2018 respectively.

In addition, JILDEE conducted a 7-day programme on “International Relations”; 3-day programme on “English Writing and Reading Skill”; and 2-day programme on “Organization Psychology and Emotional Intelligence” for Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) officers and Telangana State Service officers in the month of May. Both the programmes were residential with a pedagogy of Case Studies, Interactive Learning and Outbound activities.

The training year ended with JILDEE once again making its mark in the domain of executive education by conducting over 30 programmes for various government organisations and public sector units. The programmes were a mix of residential programmes both on and off campus, including a programme in Singapore and other outbound programmes.

Government Sector

More than 200 officers of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) including a batch of 20 monks and nuns were trained in leadership, management and communication skills. The 2-week module on Leadership, Management and Communication Skills was designed in collaboration with the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS).

JILDEE also engaged with the West Bengal Government wherein 25 officers of the State Administrative Service underwent a 5-day domestic module on Public Finance and Budgeting at JGU and were then taken to Singapore for a 5-day programme held at the LKY School, NUS.

Public Sector Undertakings

JILDEE conducted programmes on “Women Empowerment” for female employees of the Power Grid Corporation of India in the month of April and May 2018. Women participants came from offices/branches located across the country. The 3-days residential programmes were conducted at Shimla and Jim Corbett National Park. The participants not only had the opportunity to learn the rights and laws governing women and their empowerment but also had a sneak into nature with a trip to Shimla and safaris in the Corbett National Park.

The other Public Sector Undertakings addressed were Power Grid Corporation of India, NHPC, IFFCO, THDC, CCIC, THDC and Indian Oil Corporation etc.

The month of May also saw JILDEE launch three pilot government programmes:

  • A 7-day programme on International Relations for the CTA officers was conducted from 6-12 May 2018. Designed in collaboration with the Jindal School of International Affairs, the programme was well taken by the participants. A number of retired ambassadors and senior retired Army Generals formed the core team of resource persons for the programme.

Future Engagements

JILDEE is busy making fresh inroads into a number of organisations with a stress on domestic and foreign programmes. The Government of West Bengal will be sending a batch of 25 officers for a programme to be conducted at the Somerville College, Oxford University UK and the LKY School of Public Policy, Singapore in the month of August and November respectively.

Public Sector Undertakings like the Power Grid, NHPC, THDC, Indian Oil and IFFCO have been actively engaged and have confirmed programmes for the year. Besides, JILDEE is actively engaged in opening doors with new PSUs and Corporations including the Rural Electrification Corporation, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, and the Power Finance Corporation.

JGU faculty members elected as Office Bearers to ISIL Executive Council


Two of JGU’s faculty members, Professor Y.S.R. Murthy, Registrar and Executive Director, Centre for Human Rights Studies, Jindal Global Law School and Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik, Director, Centre for Postgraduate Legal Studies and Executive Director, Centre for South Asian Legal Studies, Jindal Global Law School have been elected as Office Bearers to the Executive Council (EC) of the prestigious Indian Society of International Law (ISIL), New Delhi. Professor Murthy was elected as the Vice President of the ISIL, while Professor Dabiru Sridhar Patnaik was elected as the Treasurer. Both will hold office for a three-year term (2018-2021). Professor Sridhar Patnaik is also the youngest member to be elected as an Office Bearer in the sixty-year history of the institution. Both had served on the Executive Council of the ISIL during 2015 -2018 and made distinguished contributions to the work of the Society.

The Executive Council of the ISIL is the highest policy and decision making body that provides leadership and guidance to the activities of the Society. The EC is comprised of 17 members – the President, Executive President, 3 Vice Presidents, Treasurer and 12 members, and is a distinguished body that includes eminent Professors, Vice Chancellors, Registrars, Senior Advocates in the Supreme Court of India and Legal Advisor to the Ministry of External Affairs.

The ISIL is a premier national institution set up in 1959 for the promotion of international law, teaching and research. The Society was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and was founded by Shri V.K.Krishna Menon, Minister of Defence during Pandit Nehru’s time and former High Commissioner of India to the UK. It has a rich history and legacy and has on its rolls distinguished international jurists and diplomats.

The ISIL is also one of the oldest Societies and enjoys a rich tradition of fostering understanding of international law along with other pre-eminent international law Societies like the Japanese Society of International Law (1897) and the American Society of International Law (1906). It is the only Society in the world to have an Academy – the Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy (1964) that was founded to further the ‘objective of dissemination of the knowledge of international law’.

Vivekanand Jha

My winter internship was with Madras Institute of Development studies (MIDS), from 18 December 2017 to 29 January 2018. I was involved in Tamil Nadu Household Panel Survey, which is a government of Tamil Nadu project in which MIDS and survey Research centre, University of Michigan, USA are the research partners. This project was to assess the socio-economic conditions of the Tamil Nadu at the district level. After spending one semester from August, 2017 to December, 2017, and after learning the subjects like sustainable human development and public policy making and process, it was an eye opening internship for me and I became more familiar with policy making process. I have learnt the following things at MIDS;

  • Familiarized myself with the literature on panel surveys and acquired deeper understanding of the theory as well as skills required for longitudinal panel studies and data analysis.
  • Familiar with the conversion of paper questionnaire to Computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI)
  • Another most important thing which I learnt was how to collect data digitally.

My experience of winter internship was very great and I will be carrying forward these insights and skills throughout my carrier. Now over the summer, I will be doing a paid research internship with the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), New Delhi, where I will be involved in research project on teacher quality assessment and reporting. I will learn how to assess the quality of teachers and how to write report especially on teacher quality assessment. I hope that my summer internship would also be a great step for my carrier. In the future, I would like to serve this country as an administrative officer to bring about change in the social sector for human development. Many thanks to my Public Policy Master’s programme and the Centre for Comparative and Global Education @ JGU for providing these experiential learning opportunities through internships to serve the country in the future.

Samridhi Puri

Certain experiences change your life and bring whole new fulfilling perspective to it. Something similar happened with me last winter. I got an opportunity to intern with one the most prestigious think tank of the country, NITI Aayog, It is a policy think tank of the Government of India and central to most policies tailored in the country. My internship period commenced from the 15th of December, 2017 and went up till the 4th of February, 2018 in the innovation and entrepreneurship promotion vertical called, the Atal Innovation Mission. I was an operations intern handling documentation of over 1500 schools all across the country, which were to receive grants from the government for establishing Atal Tinkering Laboratories. These labs as proposed, are instrumental in inculcating an entrepreneurial and innovative drive among students in schools within classes 6-10. The primary objective of this scheme is to foster curiosity, creativity and imagination in young minds; and instil skills such as computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing and so on.

My work included:

  • Strategising grant disbursement on national level for Atal Tinkering Labs
  • Planning implementation and follow-up of grant usage
  • Working on evaluation and future documentation submission methods
  • Learning technicalities and working on grant selection, documentation verification and sanctioning

This knowledge educated me not only the grind of the real world but also helped me in putting the theoretical knowledge of my course work to practical use. It is rightly said, how certain aspects to any subject specialisation can’t be taught but must be learnt through practice which was made possible through this experience of a lifetime. I am looking forward to what great interactions this course brings for me through both the course structure and the internships lined for the future. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank OP Jindal University, for its utmost support as well as the Centre for Comparative and Global Education here at JGU, which has helped me live up to the best of my abilities.

Anmol Jain

I got selected for Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) summer Internship program, for the post of Research Intern. My role at ASER will be as a research intern. It will include field visits to schools, working in the area of Inclusive education, and monitoring the practical applicability of Inclusive education model in schools by analysing the teacher student relationship within the classroom.

I will join the summer Internship program from 18 June 2018 for a period of 6 weeks.
