In June, Learning and Development (L&D) at JGU held a series of learning initiatives \u00a0that combined digital skills, communication, creativity, professionalism, inclusion, engagement and wellbeing under one overarching concept to help employees work with more confidence, clarity and purpose.<\/p>\n
A series of specific programmes were held for employees of Faculty & Staff Housing Management Services, Office of Events & Conference Services, Office of Food Services and Laundry Services, Office of Student Housing and Residential Life, Infrastructure Campus Operations & Estate Development, and Sodexo. These programmes were designed with a focus on practical application, ensuring that employee learning connects directly to their day-to-day responsibilities and service delivery in the workplace.<\/p>\n
The season began with an introductory \u2018Computer Literacy Workshop\u2019 that provided a supportive environment for participants to gain the necessary knowledge in using basic IT functions and digital tools. The programme helped employees connect technology to daily tasks such as documentation, record management, communications, and administrative support.<\/p>\n
The \u2018Design with Canva\u2019 programme showcased creativity as participants explored how simple design tools can improve communication in the workplace. The programme encouraged employees to go beyond simply sharing information, and to understand how to make posters, notices, invitations, announcements, and visual communication materials clearer, appealing and professional. Practical efficiency was also strengthened through Excel Made Easy, which focused on making Excel simpler and more relevant for daily work. Participants explored ways to organise data, maintain records, use basic formulas, prepare simple reports and improve accuracy.<\/p>\n
With the advent of Workplace Communication 3.0, the focus shifted to one of the most important skills in the workplace: meaningful communication. The programme encouraged participants to reflect on clarity, tone, listening, responsiveness, and respectful interactions. Practical examples were used to show how communication affects coordination, teamwork, trust and quality of service. We were able to confirm that even slight improvements in daily conversations can lead to smoother collaboration between departments.<\/p>\n
In collaboration with the Committee On Gender Sensitisation Against Sexual Harassment (COGSASH ) of JGU, L&D also conducted essential awareness session for support staff on gender sensitivity and prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace. This session initiated important discussions on dignity, respect, inclusion, gender sensitivity, appropriate workplace behavior, and prevention of sexual harassment.<\/p>\n
The idea of preparedness in the workplace was explored as part of \u2018Professionalism in the Workplace\u2019. The programme encouraged participants to view professionalism as a daily practice that is reflected in punctuality, accountability, communication standards, accountability, teamwork and respectful behaviour.<\/p>\n
In addition to scheduled events, the June calendar also included open-to-all programmes. \u2018Creating an Effective Presentation: From Ideas to Visual Expression\u2019 helped participants understand that an effective presentation begins long before slides are designed. This helped them organise their ideas, reduce text, use facts and figures meaningfully, and translate their thoughts into clear visual expression. The programme positioned presentations as a tool for storytelling, clarity and impact.<\/p>\n
The month also brought new opportunities for connection and wellness through \u2018Match the Beat\u2019 and \u2018Harmony Haven\u2019. \u2018Match the Beat\u2019 added energy, rhythm, coordination, and teamwork through dance to the academic calendar, while \u2018Harmony Haven\u2019 provided a calming space for introspection, balance, mindfulness, and personal well-being with music. Together, these programmes reminded the JGU community that employee development is not just about skills and performance, but also about connection, passion and inner balance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
