The Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences organised the 6th International Conference on Victim Assistance on 27th and 28th October 2017 at the JGU campus.

The main theme for this year’s conference was “Evolving Perspectives on Victimology”. The conference had over 100 paper presentations and 3 parallel sessions held over a period of two days. The conference was attended by approximately 300 attendees from across the world.

The Jindal Global Educational & Professional Academy (J-GEPA), a knowledge sharing initiative between JGU and the Jindal Group was inaugurated in New Delhi on 21 October 2017.

The Academy was inaugurated by Mr. Prithviraj Jindal, Chairman, Jindal Saw Limited and was presided by Ms. Savitri Jindal, Chairperson Emeritus, O.P. Jindal Group in the august presence of the Founding Chancellor Naveen Jindal and other members of the Jindal family – Mr. Sajjan Jindal, Ms. Arti Jindal, Ms. Sangita Jindal, Ms. Deepika Jindal, Ms. Shallu Jindal and Ms. Seema Jindal-Jajodia. The event reflected the extraordinary support that JGU has received from the Jindal family under the philanthropic leadership of Chancellor Jindal.

The Academy is located at the NTH Complex in the Qutub Institutional Area. The aim of launching the Academy is to be able to provide high-quality, world-class infrastructure for JGU’s academic programmes, training and capacity building initiatives and events including research conferences, seminars and lectures, and play a key role in institutional activities being held in New Delhi.

The central location of the facility

will enable the University to better access key city-based resources that have otherwise proved to be a challenge on the JGU campus. This will include students and participants of JGU’s courses, practitioners, industry-based networks, members of the diplomatic community, legal and judicial fraternity, corporate leaders, and peer institutions located in Delhi. The central location of the facility will also provide enhanced access to potential research and collaborative networks that will increase the diversity, depth and scope of JGU’s research profile.

The facility has three 60-seater and one 52-seater smart classrooms with provisions for a library and two breakout zones for informal and formal interactions. The vision for the facility was to create a modern, inspiring and technology-enabled space for institutional and academic activities. This directly derives from JGU’s vision to provide learning, working and living environments that are inspiring and empowering.

As JGU has grown rapidly, a key aim has been to ensure that the University’s physical environment fosters a sense of belonging, community, ownership and interconnectedness; inspires and encourages creativity and innovation; and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, creative problem-solving and catalytic interactions. This is seen as particularly important given that JGU is a residential university. Given JGU’s rapid growth vision over the coming years, particular emphasis will be placed on paying close attention to integrating the institutional history and vision; the social aspect of a residential university; and increased awareness of immediate environments into the University’s physical spaces on campus and in associated facilities like the J-GEPA.

JGU has launched two new summer schools – the Jindal Oxford Programme on “International Organisations and their Role in the World” and the Jindal-Fletcher Programme on “Diplomacy and Foreign Policy”. Both summer schools will be offered through the International Institute for Higher Education Research & Capacity Building (IIHEd) at JGU and the Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA). Both programmes are uniquely designed for students of JSIA.

Jindal Oxford Programme on “International Organisations and their Role in the World”

This 3-week programme will be held from June 17 to July 6, 2018, at the University of Oxford. It will be led by a distinguished professor at the University of Oxford and participants will be residing in a prestigious St. Hilda’s College, Oxford during the entire duration of the programme. 

Professor Deepanshu Mohan, Assistant Professor, JSIA and Professor Jessica Field, Assistant Professor, JSIA will be the two faculty coordinators for this programme which will be led by Professor Sreeram Chaulia, Dean of JSIA.

Jindal-Fletcher Programme on “Diplomacy and Foreign Policy”

This 3-week programme will be held from July 8 to July 27, 2018, at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA. It will be led by a distinguished professor of the Fletcher School and participants will be residing on the scenic Tufts University campus during the entire duration of the programme. 

Professor Mohan Kumar, Vice Dean, JSIA and Professor Shanthi Karuppusamy, Associate Professor will be the two faculty coordinators for this programme, which will be led by Professor Sreeram Chaulia, Dean of JSIA.

The vision for the programme emerged from interactions between Vice Chancellor, Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar and Professor Stephen P. Marks, distinguished member of the Governing Body of JGU and professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, and Dean James Stavridis and faculty and staff members of the Fletcher School in July 2017. The Fletcher School is one of the world’s leading schools of international affairs.

The new Office of Alumni & Development was established at JGU in early October. Dr. Michael J. Barnes will lead the Office as Director.

The Office of Alumni & Development will be responsible for strategising and fostering excellent alumni relations by building and strengthening relationships between the University and its community of graduates, friends, students and others. The Office will identify, cultivate, and solicit philanthropic support and build relationships with prospects including individuals, corporations and foundations.

Dr. Barnes holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) in degree in Economics from the London School of Economics & Political Science, his MBA is from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, and his Doctor of Management degree was awarded by the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, USA in 1999. His research interests include global business strategy, law in business, global portfolio investment, and global regime formation around public goods issues (like Climate Change) which was the focus of his doctoral dissertation.

Previously, he was Principal and Chief Academic Officer of The British College in Kathmandu, Nepal, which directly delivers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees awarded by two U.K. universities: the University of West of England and Leeds Beckett University.  

Prior to that, Dr. Barnes was Chair of the Accounting & Finance department within the Faculty of Economics & Commerce at Hoa Sen University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He also taught undergraduate and graduate courses as a visiting overseas professor in Vietnam at Ton Duc Thang University, RMIT University Vietnam, Paris Graduate School of Management, the University of Economics (UEH) and the University of Technology (HUTECH) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. For three years (2012-15) he was the Founding Dean and Professor of Management at the School of Business & Economics of the newly-established Tan Tao University in Long An Province, Vietnam.

Professor Barnes first came to India and JGU in 2010 as the Founding Dean and Professor of Management of Jindal Global Business School, graduating the very first MBA cohort in 2012.

Immediately before coming to India in 2010, he had served as Academic Dean for S.P. Jain School of Global Management’s Global MBA Programme in the twin campuses of Dubai /Singapore where he was heavily involved in accreditation and quality assurance matters. He was previously Academic Dean of Hult International Business School’s first ever ‘satellite campus’ in Dubai, UAE in 2007-2008.

After being awarded the Doctor of Management degree from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio in 1999, Dr. Barnes was appointed to the newly created position of Assistant Dean for Action Learning & Corporate Liaison at the Weatherhead School, where he was also responsible for the Career Development Centre, Office of Student Life, Alumni Affairs Office, and External Relations. Later he became Assistant Dean and Director of the MBA Programme at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

From 2003-07 Dr. Barnes served as the inaugural John F. Fiedler/BorgWarner Chair of Global Business Studies at Kent State University, Ohio, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in four separate departments: Finance, Economics, Marketing, and Management (Strategy). 

Before entering full-time academia in 2000, Dr. Barnes worked for many years in international banking – first at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. in New York, then with J Henry Schroder Wagg & Co. Limited in London, England, and later as executive director of Lazard Asset Management, Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS), Fuji International Finance, and Deputy General Manager of The Industrial Bank of Japan (IBJ) in London, following his time as Investment Officer with The World Bank in Washington DC.

Dr. Barnes has also been appointed Professor and Director of the new Master of Arts in Business Laws Programme at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS). In this role, he will provide leadership and initiative in the expert design, planning and launch of the programme which will begin in the 2018-19 Academic Year. He will work actively towards attracting bright and diligent students from India and abroad and work closely with the Admissions & Outreach Office to admit the first batch of students to the programme.

The establishment of the Office of Academic Planning, Co-ordination and Interdisciplinarity (APCI) at JGU was announced on 31 January 2017 and made operational on 1 May 2017 under the leadership of Professor Arjya Majumdar, Director, APCI and Associate Professor, Jindal Global Law School, and Dr. Brajesh Kumar, Associate Professor, Jindal Global Business School. The Office is one of the most innovative and path breaking initiatives that JGU has constituted since the University’s founding in 2009.

Universities around the world recognise at a conception level the need for promoting interdisciplinarity and cross-registration of courses across different schools and programmes. But at a practical level, this rarely happens even in the world’s leading universities. There are several reasons for this, including the need for forward thinking among the faculty and administration; geography and location of different schools within the university campus; scheduling of courses and the planning of teaching arrangements; credit systems and transfer of credits policies and different ways of recognising credits in schools and programmes; and the organisation of administrative apparatus and the lack of inter-school coordination mechanisms.

JGU has taken, in some ways, an important step in promoting interdisciplinarity that will fully capture the immense benefits it holds for pedagogical innovations only in the years to come. The APCI is seen as a good beginning and further efforts will be undertaken to promote different forms of interdisciplinary teaching and learning.

The mandate for the APCI office is threefold:

• Planning – This includes optimisation of resources such as classrooms and faculty, to ensure that course information is readily available to faculty and students and to formulate curriculum brochures for each of the schools.
• Co-ordination – This office will act as a repository for academic data across all schools, in conjunction with the JGU IT team. This academic data includes admission, course enrolment and examination data. The APCI will also work towards harmonizing school-level policies and practices and compliance of the same.
• Interdisciplinarity – The APCI will provide a report on cross registration, engage with Deans/ Academic Deans to identify courses that are relevant to be cross-registered and drive a vision of interdisciplinarity for the university.

Between May 2017 and August 2017, the APCI focused its energies on critical aspects of academic planning such as increasing classroom utilisation and monitoring cross-registered electives.

Classroom utilisation increased between Spring and Fall 2017 from 64% to 80%.

Approximately one-third of all electives at JGU are cross listed. The Jindal School of Liberal Arts & Humanities (JSLH) offers the most cross listed electives on a per-capita basis. JSLH students (85%) are also far more likely to take up cross listed electives from other schools.

 In the Fall 2017 semester, a total of 1322 students from five schools (viz. JGLS, JGBS, JSGP, JSIA and JSLH) were eligible to take up electives. These students have taken up a total of 3928 elective seats available across 148 electives. Out of the 148 electives, the following is a breakup of 54 cross-registered courses offered by each school.

As a result, out of the 3928 elective seats taken up, 1252 were offered on a cross registered basis. For each school, the percentage of elective seats that were taken up is as follows:

There seems to be some scope for targeted cross-electives across certain schools (JSLH and JSIA; JGBS and JGLS, etc.) as well as co-teaching opportunities. However, since these issues are content and subject matter specific, a deeper consultation between specific schools and faculty members is needed.

In a recent meeting on 16th August 2017 with the Deans and Academic Deans of all schools of JGU, it was decided that there was a greater need for students to be made aware of the wide variety of courses available to them across schools. The APCI has been charged with the responsibility to do so. The APCI will utilise the University’s existing ERP systems to create an online repository of electives, both school specific as well as cross listed. Each elective course shall have a dedicated page describing the elective, indicative readings and assessment patterns, past average examination results (if available), a link to the faculty bio page available on the jgu.edu website as well as a short video by the faculty member offering the course.

The Jindal School of Government and Public Policy co-hosted a Capacity Development Workshop for Local Governance and Public Policy-Making for Provincial Council members and senior bureaucrats from the Northern Council, Sri Lanka. The workshop was held on the JGU campus between 9 and 13 October 2017 and was organised by the Jindal School of Government and Public Policy in collaboration with Asia Foundation and Australian Aid.

This was a unique and important workshop that JSGP organised in which key decision-makers and bureaucrats from the Northern Province in Sri Lanka participated in a workshop to learn about the intricacies of policy making. Over a period of five days, 23 participants attended sessions conducted by faculty members from various JGU schools and also by resource persons from reputed think tanks and NGOs in India.

JGU Vice Chancellor, Professor (Dr.) C Raj Kumar delivered the welcome address in which he shared his thoughts and proposed the idea of establishing a “Jaffna Global University” along the lines of JGU to provide high quality education in Sri Lanka. Professor R. Sudarshan, Dean, JSGP in his address talked about the importance of practitioners in a public policy school. He said that council members are practitioners in a real sense and therefore a workshop with them is of great importance. This workshop was unique also because parliamentarians such as EMS Nachiappan and Mani Shankar Aiyyar conducted sessions for the participants and shared their insights and experiences with them. The participants attended class room sessions as well as visited two civil society organisations – the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA) located in Delhi. An interactive session was held with Professor (Dr.) K. Chockalingam, Vice-President, World Society of Victimology, and Chairperson, Executive Council, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumpudur, Tamil Nadu at India Islamic Cultural Centre, New Delhi.

Apart from the provincial council members, other participants in the workshop were Dilhara Goonvardane from Australian Aid, A. Subakaran and Sivanathan Gowrieshan from Asia Foundation, Sri Lanka. The JGU faculty members who conducted sessions in the workshop included Professor Mohan Kumar, Professor Sukumar Muralidharan, Professor Vinod Vyasulu, Professor Jessica Fields, Professor Sreeram Chaulia, Professor Kaveri Haritas and Director of JGU’s Quality Assurance Office, Mr. Aman Shah. Resource persons from outside of the university included Mr Chakshu Roy from PRS Legislative Research, and Subrat Das from the Centre for Budget Governance and Accountability.

The book “An Unfinished Revolution: A Hostage Crisis, Adivasi Resistance and The Naxal Movement” provides an analysis of Adivasi resistance and the Naxal movement through the 2012 Kandhamal hostage crisis.

The book was released at a panel discussion held at the India International Centre. The Public Policy Club is an initiative by students of the M.A (Public Policy) programme and aims to supplement theoretical knowledge through practical and real world simulation activities for the student community within JGU and beyond.

The idea sparked after JSGP had organised a workshop based on “City Planning Simulation Game” in collaboration with a not-for-profit group called ‘Fields of View’. The organisation specialises in tools for policy simulation and trains policy makers and students across the globe about its importance and effective use. The workshop activity consisted of two teams who were given limited resources and very basic instructions, and were supposed to make a city. The post activity discussion lasted for one and half hour where all our classroom learning was translated into actual implementation. This activity was again held as a pilot event for the student community of JSGP, which was appreciated by students and the faculty. This motivated a small group of public policy students to expand the reach of this activity based practical learning to the whole student community of JGU, with support from the faculty, administration, research associates and others who guided in the inception of the club.

The Public Policy Club was inaugurated as a society on 10 October, 2017 by Dean R. Sudarshan, Vice Dean Professor Vinod Vyasulu and guest of honour Professor Sanjeev Sahni, Principal Director, Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences, in the presence of faculty and students from all schools of JGU.

Following this, a workshop on Right to Information (RTI) was organised with the help of Mr. Sandeep Dixit, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress and former Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and Dr Rajdeep Pakanati, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Programmes), Jindal School of International Affairs. The workshop focused on how the tool of RTI can be utilised as a tool of effective governance in the Indian democracy. Mr. Sandeep Dixit talked about his rich practical experience in the field which initiated a healthy and informative discussion. Dr. Pakanati focused on the actual filing of RTI forms and being able to use it effectively. In keeping with the vision of practical learning, all participants were provided with envelopes and postal orders to file RTIs in their respective areas where they wish to seek information. The Club followed up on this workshop to provide feedback and suggestions. Another round of feedback will be held after the responses to RTIs are received by the participants.

The second activity organised is an ongoing lecture series by Dr. Rekha Datta of Monmouth University, USA. Dr. Datta is a Senior Nehru Fulbright scholar and is conducting her research in Haryana in collaboration with JSGP. The lecture series is based on the practical implications of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on a global scale. With special focus on gender equality, the workshop generates interesting viewpoints and debates on the subject. The lecture series will end with a simulation activity, wherein the students will be enacting a UN style debate in complete attire with moderators and set up, on the topic of women reservation in India. To make the activity interesting women students will stand against the motion and male students will stand in support. The outcome of the lecture series will be to understand the complexity and difficulties when debating on such important topics and being able to conclude something meaningful.

JGU Sports Leagues serve as a great vehicle for creating mixed communities and learning teamwork. After all, the star players do not win the championships but the star team does.

The JGU Sports department also organised a Prize Distribution Ceremony for “Intramural 2016-17” on 27 October 2017. The winners and runners-up of the Intramural were awarded with trophies and medals which were given away by the Pro Kabaddi superstars, Mr. Surender Nada, Captain of Haryana Steelers, Mr. Wazir Singh, Vice-Captain and Mr. Rambir Singh Khokhar, Head Coach.

This was followed by the opening ceremony of the JGU Kabaddi League. Professor (Dr.) Sanjeev P. Sahni, Principal Director, Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences delivered the special address in which he emphasised the importance of mental and psychological strength in sports. He also extended best wishes to the organising committee and the Department of Physical Education for putting up a wonderful show. Mr. Rambir Singh in his address spoke about important techniques and tactics to play kabaddi.

SOCH is a socio-political forum of JGU that aims to inform, educate and ensure a constructive free dialogue on social, cultural and political issues affecting contemporary Indian society, through screening documentaries and holding constructive discussions with experts from the field, while at the same time not associating itself with any ideology.

SOCH organised five documentary screenings this semester followed by engaging discussions on the various socio-political issues.

The first documentary screened was ‘Sri Lanka’s killing fields’ by Callum Macrae, an investigatory documentary about the final weeks of the Sri Lankan Civil War. It featured clips from the conflict zone filmed by civilians and Sri Lankan soldiers with an intention to portray “horrific war crimes.”

This was followed by the screening of ‘The Red Data – An Appendix’ by Deepu and Sreemith. The film is a layered examination of the factors, both contemporary and historical, that have led the Adivasi (tribal) communities of Attappady (Kerala, South India) to the verge of extinction. Mr. Sreemith, the co-director of the documentary joined the discussion wherein he threw more light upon the multitude of issues that the tribal community of India face and also enlightened the students as to how this community was also subjected to Brahminism and Sanskritisation.

A globally celebrated documentary, ‘Court’ was then screened, which is a quiet, devastating critique of the antiquated Indian legal system directed by Chaitanya Tamhane. This film narrates the story of a folk singer and a Dalit activist living in Mumbai who is arrested on a bizarre accusation.

‘The Rohingya: Silent Abuse’ by Al Jazeera was screened next. The film investigated the dilemma of Myanmar’s Rohingya, examining cruelty against the ethnic minority community and shows how the government denies citizenship, restricts their movement, ability to marry, access to education and healthcare. Along with Dr. Nehginpao Kipgen, Assistant Professor and Director of Centre for Southeast Asian Studies, Jindal School of International Affairs, the students discussed the denied citizenship and the cruelty the Rohingyas have been subjected to.

‘The Hunting Ground’,  a documentary shocker about rape on American Ivy League college campuses was the latest to be screened. It shows us many young women and some men recounting on camera how they were raped at their schools and then subsequently denied justice by those same schools. This issue was also well analysed by Dr. Gerd Ferdinand Kirchhoff, Executive Director, Centre for Victimology and Psychological Studies at the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences.

Over the past two months, SOCH provided students a platform to understand the depth of gruesome issues through these documentaries. Further discussions helped the students understand peer and expert opinions on the issues chosen.

SOCH also maintains an online blog that provides its readers a way to individually voice their opinions so as to maintain the thread of myriad insights on a particular issue.

The Jindal School of Government and Public Policy (JSGP) inaugurated the Economics Club in early October 2017. The Club was formed by the BA Economics (Hons) 2016 batch.

Arthaniti aims to create a way for JGU students who have similar interests to get together and enhance not only their academic experience but also learn more about economic transactions from both a theoretical and practical perspective. The Club strives to create a more inclusive economics community on the JGU campus given that economics is a very versatile discipline, and has much to contribute in making sense of the major contemporary issues and challenges.

The Club will organise events that offer both theoretical and practical experience for students to understand the world of economics better. Some of the activities planned for the year include presentations on economic highlights, debates, survey projects, movie screenings, and, some interesting simulation activities such as mock stocks.

During October 25 to 27, 2017, a delegation from the university comprising of Dean of JSGP Prof. R Sudarshan, Vice Dean Dr. Vinod Vyasulu, Pratik Phadkule, Research Associate, JSGP and Professor Deepanshu Mohan from JSIA participated in the fourth international conference organized by the International Development and Public Policy Alliance (IDPPA) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conference was hosted by Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), a research and educational institution in Brazil. The theme of the conference was ‘Beyond Economics: The Stockholm Declaration and Setting Global Policy Priorities’. Pratik Phadkule and Professor Deepanshu Mohan from JSIA presented papers in the conference. Participants from universities in Brazil, China, Russia, India, South Africa, Turkey, Egypt, Malaysia, and Thailand participated and presented their papers in the conference.

The International Development and Public Policy Alliance (IDPPA) was inaugurated in 2012 to connect scholars and practitioners in major emerging economies to collaborate in the areas of research, teaching, and policy action. The Jindal School of Government and Public Policy (JSGP) at OP Jindal Global University is one of the founding members of this alliance. Jindal School of Government and Public Policy (JSGP) hosted the second IDPPA annual conference of in 2015 on the theme “Beyond the Washington Consensus: Public Policy and the Future of Development Assistance.” 

The other annual conference, held in different cities around the world. The first Annual Conference, “Life in the New Global Cities,” was held in July 2013 in Beijing, with co-sponsorship of a wide range of global organizations in diverse sectors: UN Habitat, OECD, Urban China Initiative, McKinsey & Company, Columbia University, and Brandeis University. The third Annual Conference was held in Moscow 13-15 October 2016, under the auspices of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA). The conference was entitled “Models of Development: Perspectives on Policy Futures.”
