The inaugural batch of the AISP Summer School hosted by the International Institute for Higher Education Research & Capacity Building (IIHEd) at JGU between June 16 and 30, 2017.
The International Institute for Higher Education Research & Capacity Building (IIHEd) at JGU held the inaugural edition of the Aspire India Scholars Programme Summer School for high school students from June 16-30, 2017. The Summer School complements JGU’s vision to advance access, equity and quality in higher education in India. This includes creating opportunities for high school students to experience the diversity of programmes, disciplines and campus environments that are available to them and enabling an informed transition from high school to university.

During the two-week intensive residential programme, the students engaged in classes taught by faculty members of JGU and also had the opportunity to listen to Aspire India Ambassadors, young achievers from the fields of public policy and social entrepreneurship, media and communications, and creative writing and publishing. The summer school also included sports and recreational activities including drama workshops and movie screenings.

The first cohort of the AISP welcomed 17 students from CBSE, ICSE and IB schools across a number of Indian cities and towns, including Surat, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Allahabad, Ghazipur, Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Chandigarh. The Aspire India Scholars Programme (AISP) aims to develop young leaders equipped to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world and play leading roles in public life. Summer School Vision
The AISP summer school provides high school students with a globally oriented academic engagement designed to prepare them for the critical transition to higher education, which can help build satisfying careers and meaningful lives. In addition to academic instruction in six major fields, and the chance to participate in a variety of creative pursuits and outdoor activities, participants will receive counseling, mentoring with respect to higher education, and career planning that includes aptitude-testing, individual career counseling, and sessions on strategizing for success. The East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) and JGU have a long standing partnership with the Jindal Global Law School. On 10 June 2017, the two universities strengthened their existing relationship by signing university-level cooperation agreements. The agreements were signed on the occasion of the inaugural China-India Legal Forum which was jointly hosted by the Jindal Global Law School, the Institute of BRICS Legal Studies of the ECUPL and Dentons Shanghai Office on the theme of ‘How to Avoid Legal Risks While Investing in India’. The Forum was conceptualised during a visit by a JGU delegation to ECUPL in April 2017.

The IBM Business Analytics Lab was inaugurated on the JGU campus on June 1, 2017 by Mr. Vivek Vasishtha, Executive Director and Country Leader, Government and Regulatory Affairs India and South Asia, IBM. Also present were JGU Vice Chancellor, Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, JGBS Dean, Professor (Dr.) Tapan Panda and JGU faculty and staff members. The IBM Business Analytics Lab being inaugurated by Mr. Vivek Vasishtha, Executive Director and Country Leader, Government and Regulatory Affairs India and South Asia, IBM. Also present were JGU Vice Chancellor, Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar and JGBS Dean, Professor (Dr.) Tapan Panda.The lab will provide necessary support and a critical analysis platform to execute the JGBS MBA Business Analytics programme smoothly. The Lab is equipped with predictive and cognitive analytics using IBM SPSS & WATSON, Descriptive Analytics using IBM Cognos and Big Data & Analytics using IBM InfoSphere and BigInsight. The ultimate objective of this co-designed analytics lab with IBM is to facilitate future business leaders to think and understand the business process analytically. The lab has the capability to provide end-to-end ecosystem of data analytics along with cognitive capabilities.JGBS will conduct faculty training programmes in the near future to train faculty on how to use these software and best optimise the lab’s functions. In addition, the School will offer courses to JGU students in the area of analytics. This lab will complement both teaching and research in various related domains.

The Jindal Initiative on Research in IP & Competition (JIRICO) hosted the second edition of the international conference on “Standardization, Patents and Competition Issues: Developments and Perspectives in the Asia Pacific Region and Europe”. This edition explored four critical themes in the field: SSOs’ Patent Policies and Due Process Principles; Reasonable Royalty Determination: Principles and Best Practices; Patent Bundling leading to Anti-competitive Practices; and Transparency and Procedural Fairness in Antitrust Enforcement.

The Peer Educator Program is a pioneering idea that was brought to practice by the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences in September 2015. As a budding University that is expanding every semester, there are many concerns that crop up within the student body. The student body is diverse, both by national and international representations. This kind of diversity brings both value and conflicts unseen. Many students, especially in the initial years, struggle to cope with campus and university life. The transition to young adulthood is particularly difficult for them and they are often lost without a proper forum to address their concerns.
While the JGU campus is well equipped to professionally deal with student problems, with two full-time student counselors, there was the realisation that there should be more forums to address student life issues. Since there is still stigma prevalent amongst the student body to reach out for professional help, the Peer Educator Program is a unique solution to such student problems.

The Peer Educator Program capitalises on the reality that students are often more open and willing to talk about their issues to their peers and seniors as facilitators. They look up to them as more relatable figures who go through similar issues and are more willing to open up on personal, professional, inter-personal issues. The Program seeks to train a set of pre-identified students to be able to act as resource persons who are capable of identifying student issues and problems and deliver the required help. They act as liaisons for those who are willing but unable to get help.
A peer-to-peer support system is one of the best possible ways to ensure a positive, well-balanced, physically and mentally healthy atmosphere for students in academic institutions. The main aim of the Peer Educator Program is to spread awareness on various mental health-related issues and to promote positive psychological well-being of students on campus. The Program comprises a team of 5 core members as Peer Educators and 54 events have been organised since its inception.

During the academic semester, the Program plans weekly or bi-weekly activities for the student cohort of the University. The activities range from team building, stress busters, movie screening, open-mic sessions, debates, and talks on mental and physical health by experts. These activities provide a wide platform to the student body to come together and work as a team. The specific environment provided may not be available otherwise for these students. All activities are completely student-planned and student-led.
Although the Program still has a long way to go, in order to strategically meet long-term goals, it is currently seeking to expand its volunteer team. Being a peer educator is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience working directly with students, improve public speaking and program planning skills, and join a group of talented, creative, dedicated students who are committed to the Peer Educator Program’s mission of wellness for all.

Building on the existing partnership between JGU and Indiana University, officials and faculty members of the Kelly School of Business at Indiana University visited JGU on June 23, 2017 for the signing ceremony of the Sub Agreement for Academic Cooperation and Exchange between Indiana University and Jindal Global Business School.
The delegation included Professor Eric De Haan, Associate Vice President for International Development; Idie Kesner, Executive Associate Dean of Academic Programs; and Ash Soni, Executive Associate Dean for Academic Programs.
The signing of the agreement opens up the possibility of student and faculty exchange programmes for both universities. The parties agreed to collaborate on short-term visiting study programmes. They also discussed the possibility of collaborative research, organising joint conferences and teaching cases.

The Jindal Institute of Leadership Development & Executive Education (JILDEE) at JGU has continued to consolidate the University’s programme capacities in leadership development and executive education through its training programmes. The training year 2017-18 began with nine programmes conducted between April and June 2017. The programmes conducted were on Public Policy and Governance, Leadership, Management and Communication skills and a general management development programme. Modules: The 2-week module on Leadership, Management and Communication Skills for the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) is designed in collaboration with the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS). This programme has been delivered to 8 batches of the CTA.The module on Public Policy and Governance is a 5-day module designed by the Jindal School of Government and Public Policy (JSGP). This is a popular programme which has also been delivered to various other organisations including the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), and state governments including Gujarat and Haryana.Faculty: JILDEE taps the rich faculty available in the various school of the JGU with a mix of external resource persons from reputed institutes like the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, Centre for Technology and Development, New Delhi, and the National Institute of Financial Management. In addition, senior IAS officers and heads of various central government organisations are invited to deliver talks for the programmes.JILDEE is also exploring collaborations with a number of organisations with a stress on foreign programmes. The Government of West Bengal is scheduled to send a batch of 25 officers for a programme to be conducted at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. The Government of Karnataka, Government of Odisha, Government of Himachal Pradesh and Government of Madhya Pradesh have confirmed programmes in the coming months.Public sector undertakings like the Power Grid, NHPC Limited and the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) have confirmed programmes for this year with the first programme on Women Empowerment conducted at Shimla from June 7, 2017. A foreign programme in Germany for Power Grid officers is in the pipeline.
In the Spring semester 2017, the International Institute for Higher Education Research & Capacity Building (IIHEd) at JGU applied for three important institutional memberships for JGU to become part of international networks of universities. Each of the applications were successful.
After reviewing the institutional application and required documentations, the founding members of the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNi) based at Barcelona, Spain, has now inducted JGU as a permanent member. GUNi includes 150 innovative institutions around the world that are interested in the social commitment of higher education, including the UNESCO chairs in higher education.
JGU has also become a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the Institute of International Education (IIE), the largest global not-for-profit network for higher educational exchange. These memberships will further help to expand JGU’s international network and promote collaborative work in research and teaching.
