“The idea is to expedite the trial and conclude it at the earliest.”: Supreme Court of India

By Praneetha Shivaprasad

A division bench of the Supreme Court stayed the bail granted by the Karnataka High Court to a seer who was arrested under the POCSO Act. The bail was stayed since there was a reasonable apprehension that the petitioner may adversely influence the witnesses or the survivors. The court stayed the bail based on a prima facie view of the case,  in order to ensure a fair trial and in the interests of the victims. The court emphasized the need for an expeditious trial by providing directions for the same, to balance the interests of the survivor and the accused. (Petition(s) for Special Leave to Appeal (Crl.)
