“Karnataka CID Charges Former CM Yediyurappa with Sexual Assault on Minor; Aides Accused of Evidence Tampering”

By Shazia Siddiqui

In a recent development, the Karnataka CID has filed a chargesheet against former Chief Minister and prominent BJP leader, BS Yediyurappa, along with three of his aides. The charges stem from allegations of sexual assault involving a minor. Yediyurappa is accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, specifically IPC Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 204 (destruction of document or electronic record to prevent its production as evidence), 214 (offering gift or restoration of property in consideration of screening offender), and Section 8 of the POCSO Act (sexual assault).

The case began with a complaint filed by a woman on March 15, alleging that her 17-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by Yediyurappa. The incident reportedly occurred when the girl, accompanied by her mother, visited Yediyurappa’s residence in February to seek his assistance in expediting an investigation into a previous rape case. Tragically, the complainant, the girl’s mother, succumbed to lung cancer last month, adding a layer of poignancy to the case.

Following the initial complaint, the Bengaluru Police registered an FIR against the 81-year-old leader. Given the gravity of the allegations and the political sensitivities involved, the investigation was later handed over to the CID by the government. Subsequently, a Bengaluru court issued a non-bailable warrant for Yediyurappa’s arrest. However, this arrest was stayed by the Karnataka High Court, temporarily halting the proceedings against him.

In response to the renewed attention on the case, the BJP has accused the ruling Congress government of politicizing the issue. The BJP claims that the allegations and subsequent legal actions are attempts to divert public attention from the Congress party’s recent electoral losses in the state. Yediyurappa himself has staunchly denied the allegations, framing them as part of a broader conspiracy aimed at discrediting him and stating, “People would teach a lesson to those indulging in conspiracies against me.”

The charges against Yediyurappa’s aides are particularly significant, as they include accusations of attempting to destroy evidence and cover up the incident to protect Yediyurappa. These charges highlight the complexities of the case, suggesting an orchestrated effort to obscure the truth.

This case has brought intense scrutiny and debate, not only because of the serious nature of the allegations but also due to Yediyurappa’s high-profile status within Indian politics. As the legal proceedings continue, the outcome of this case could have significant implications for the involved parties and for the broader political landscape in Karnataka. The courts’ careful handling of this sensitive case will be crucial in ensuring justice and maintaining public trust in the legal system.
