The spectacular evening conferred graduation of seventh batch of students with gold medals and degrees.

Congratulating the graduating
batch, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India said, “it gives me immense
pleasure to be a part of the convocation ceremony of Jindal Global University
that is making a name for itself as a centre of excellence in social sciences
and humanities. Convocations are important occasions as it is a culmination of the
hard work that the students put in to pursue their dreams and I would like to
congratulate the parents and the faculty of the University. I am personally
very happy to present gold medals and awards to so many women which is the need
of the hour. If one provides the platform for women to excel, they will achieve
heights and unfortunately we have not been able to provide education to many
girls across the country. India as a country has always given respect to women
and we must hold these values. The Puranas speak about devis,
they don’t speak about mantris. Girl child empowerment is picking up and
we believe that it will become better as we make progress. Women deserve
empowerment, I feel reassured about the women of my country, watching this
programme today. Opportunities must prevail for everyone. On the future, the
girl education will not cause tension but only attention

“My appeal to my countrymen is — let us promote girl child’s education in
a big way and allow them to come up and compete. We hope that in the future
people realise their potential and give them more and more encouragement and
help them perform better,” Naidu said.

Pointing to disturbing incidents in the country, Naidu said that Indian culture
values respect for elders, parents, teachers, fellow human beings, and other
creatures.

“What is happening in the country is very disturbing. We don’t have a
history of attacking any country. We were ruled in the past by many rulers,
including the British, but our civilization remains high. We must preserve that
civilization.”

“We should not allow aberrations and diversions to take place. We should
focus our attention to our welfare of all people and treat as all part of one
family.

He pointed out that 65 per cent of Indians are below the age of 35, which
presents both opportunities and challenges.

“We need to meet the aspiration of our youths. For that, our core
education system must be reoriented. The governments should also focus more on
skill upgradation. There is inherent talent in our country, but the need is to
identify and encourage.”
Naidu also focussed on health and exercise. “Health is very importance.
Amid changing lifestyles, youngsters must focus on physical activity, with
exercises like yoga or cycling.”
As to the students planning to go abroad for higher studies or careers, he
advised them to learn and earn there “but ultimately return to your
country and serve the motherland”.

Addressing the students, Ms.
Justice Gita Mittal, Hon’ble Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi said, “As
you set off in your respective professions-many of you will join companies, law
firms, MNCs and other vocations. Some of you may also pursue higher studies.
All avenues are wide open for you. However, you must remember that no matter
where you focus your energies, you must always grasp opportunities to engage in
social change around you. This is critically important so as to remain grounded
to our roots and stay connected to the problems facing our society, as well as
to engage in alleviating such problems.”

Delivering his speech,
Chancellor Mr Naveen Jindal said “ Naveen Jindal, Chancellor, O.P Jindal
University said, today is a special day since it is a day of celebration,
reflection and gratitude for all. It is my father’s, Shri Om Prakash Mittal’s,
88th birth anniversary and we created JGU in his memory. He always said
that education is the greatest gift that can be given to anyone. I wish he was
here to see the incredible work that has been done all over the years. JGU is
an example of the contribution we have made to the country. All students here
must thank their parents for their sacrifices and contributions to help you
make your career. I would like to thank Prof. Raj Kumar and the 300+ faculty
members who are the main force of the professional success for the graduating
students. Jindal Global University and celebration of the University’s
Founder’s Day. The Seventh Convocation is an important milestone in the
University’s history as we mark more than half a decade of graduating students
who have gone on to make significant contributions to our society and economy.
This year also marks the ninth year since our founding. Having made a modest
beginning in 2009 with one school, a few programmes, a small number of students
and around 10 faculty members, JGU has made steady progress in expanding to
become a full-fledged university with 11 undergraduate, 6 postgraduate and
Ph.D. programmes offered by its eight Schools, over 4200 students and over 330
faculty members. This is a huge responsibility and we are taking our
aspirations and commitment to excellence across all our programmes. In the
years ahead, we hope to consolidate our programmes and learn from experience to
further improve our capacities to contribute to the field of higher education.”

On his 88th birth
anniversary, the guests and dignitaries paid tribute to Mr. O.P. Jindal – a visionary
leader in whose memory JGU was established.

JGU achieved distinction in
2018 by breaking into the global university rankings. JGU has been ranked in
the 251-300 rank bracket of the QS University Rankings: BRICS 2018 Edition. JGU
is the youngest Indian university to feature in these rankings.
