{"id":1249,"date":"2017-03-30T10:40:38","date_gmt":"2017-03-30T10:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jgu.edu.in\/blog\/?p=1249"},"modified":"2019-11-07T08:37:01","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T08:37:01","slug":"jindal-global-university-hosts-international-conference-on-india-israel-academic-dialogues-political-and-cultural-crossings-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jgu.edu.in\/blog\/2017\/03\/30\/jindal-global-university-hosts-international-conference-on-india-israel-academic-dialogues-political-and-cultural-crossings-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Jindal Global University Hosts International Conference on &#8211; India Israel Academic Dialogues- Political and Cultural Crossings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>New Delhi, March 30<\/strong>, <strong>2017<\/strong>: Jindal Global University and Tel Aviv University in association with the Middle East Forum hosted a two-day joint conference on \u2018India-Israel Academic Dialogues: Political and Cultural Crossings\u2019 at the India Habitat Centre, in New Delhi, today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative by the Jindal\nCentre for Israel Studies (JCIS) was an attempt to understand the opportunities\nand challenges facing the two countries keeping in mind their political and\ncultural specificities. An ideational exchange between professors and students\nfrom the two universities, the conference aimed to understand the complex\nnature of both societies and explore possibilities of future collaborations in\ndifferent fields. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Ambassador Daniel\nCarmon, Ambassador of Israel to India, <\/em><\/strong>in his\ninaugural speech said, \u201cIndia and Israel need to know more about each other in\nterms of heritage, culture, values, and interests. I believe that what is being\ndone today through this conference organized by the Jindal Centre for Israel Studies is working towards this goal. We have\nalready come a long way, but much needs to be done to overcome the challenges\nahead of us. Knowing one another will help in sustaining this relationship as\nwe celebrate 25 years of this partnership. Security, food security, education, innovation,\nand water are some of the concerns that need to be addressed. Endeavors by\nacademic institutes like the Jindal Centre for Israel Studies will\ncertainly go a long way in deepening and widening this relationship. Young minds, guided by experienced minds,\nwill strengthen academic excellence and build greater awareness of our\ncommonalities and the lessons we can learn from one another.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking\nof the deep historical relationship between the two countries, <strong>Dr Shashi\nTharoor, Member of Parliament &amp; Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing\nCommittee on External Affair <\/strong>pointed out that academic institutions have\nimmense power in strengthening bonds between the two countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was\nhowever quick to add, <strong>\u201c<\/strong>The\nrelationship between the two countries should not be seen just in terms of\ncounter terrorism and intelligence sharing. It needs to have public involvement\nand a much larger manifestation. Tourism and trade between the two countries\nshould be encouraged and incentivized.&nbsp;\nAcademic exchange and collaborations should be strengthened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking\nat the inaugural session, <strong>Professor\nRaanan Rein, Elias Sourasky Professor of Latin American and Spanish History;\nCentre Head, S Daniel Abraham Center for International and Regional Studies and\nVice-President, Tel Aviv University<\/strong> said,\n\u201cIndia and Israel share similarities in values and challenges. Both have to\ndeal with the fact that they are multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and\nmulti-religious and make this a strong basis for collaboration in academics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\nemphasized that forums like this need to involve decision makers and prominent\nindustry players to strengthen ties with universities in both countries. He\nwent to say, \u201cPoliticians may want to build walls, but universities aim at\nbuilding bridges. These collaborative ties of Jindal Global University and Tel\nAviv University is crucial for the overall development of the countries and\nsuccess of the education system. Traditionally most of our research ties have\nbeen with universities from North America and Europe, but in the last 10 years,\nwe have taken a strategic decision to make India our top priority. In the last\n5 years, the presence of Indian students in our universities has grown exponentially.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cross\ncultural dialogue between Indian and Israeli academics aimed at providing a\nbetter understanding of the complex nature of the two societies and explored\ncommon interests for future collaborations. In the Indian academic context, the\nJindal Centre for Israel Studies at JSIA has been pioneering the field of\nIsrael Studies its inception in 2012 and this conference is one of the many\ninitiatives towards that objective.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was on March 30, twenty-five years ago that India and Israel first\nestablished diplomatic ties. The Jindal\nCentre for Israel Studies at the Jindal School of International Affairs\nUniversity chose this landmark day to host this conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jindal\nCentre for Israel Studies at the Jindal School of International Affairs is the\nfirst of its kind dedicated to the field of Israel studies within the Indian\nacademia and is committed to advancing India-Israel bilateral engagement. <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panelists at the two-day\nconference included diplomatic luminaries, academicians and political\nprofessionals.
