This yearly conference was an initiative from English Literary Society of O.P. Jindal Global University; the theme this year was on, \u201cEmerging Issues in English Literature\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Literary Conference was inaugurated by Ms\nMarcy Shuck, renowned educationist and former Director of Development East West\nInstitute, New York; also present in the august gathering were Vice Chancellor\nJindal Global University Professor (Dr) C Raj Kumar, Registrar, JGU, Professor\nY S R Murthy and Professor Dr Gopa Nayak and Dr Jagdish Batra of English Language\nCentre of JGU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marcy Shuck making her opening remarks, spoke about her\npersonal transition to Indopihile and how literature became her guide in\nunderstanding the varied nuances of this great cultural confluence called\n\u201cIndia\u201d. She spoke about the special\npromise of literature, \u201cwhich has a remarkable ability to open our minds to\nother cultures, to other ways of living, to other people&#8217;s hopes and their\ndespair\u201d. Literature and reading instils in us a sense of awe at the beauty and\npower of words, Ms Shuck said, \u201cAn awe at the complexity of life: and that so\nparticularly true about India\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Shuck was vocal about sublime qualities possessed by the\nauthors whom she regarded as her passport to India. She spoke about Vikram Seth\nand his \u201cSuitable Boy\u201d and compared Arundhati Roy\u2019s language in \u201cGod of Small\nThings\u201d to the like of Toni Morrison\u2019s; \u201cmulti- layered and conveys such\npowers, again power of words to describe places, situations and emotional\nexperience\u201d. She spoke about Rohinton Mistry and his \u201cA Fine Balance\u201d, which\nmade her \u201claugh through tears, story was filled with so many emotion\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor(Dr)\nC Raj Kumar resonated university\u2019s commitment to provide sharper focus on the\nstudy of literature in all its manifestation and also to develop a strong \u200ewriting programme on creative and\ngeneral writing in their approach to learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said,\n&#8221;our university is now well positioned to have stronger focus on issues\nrelating to literature more broadly in the way we have structured our liberal\narts curriculum across difference schools including the newly launched Jindal\nSchool of Journalism &amp; Communication(JSJC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two-day long conference saw\ninteresting sessions on poetry, writing discourses, reading sessions as well\nauthors discussion. Host of literary dignitaries like of Professor Violetta Trofimova, Chairperson, Dept. of Foreign\nLanguages, St. Petersburg University, Russian Federation,\nKeki N. Daruwalla, President, The Poetry Society (India) and Dr Novy Kapadia,\nauthor, were also present in the conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at\nthe valedictory session, Prof. C.R. Visweswara Rao, former Vice Chancellor, VS\nUniversity, Nellore, observed that any conference ends formally with the\nvaledictory, but \u201cit opens the mind up to a variety of possible quests and\nlines of inquiry to be pursued with diligence, and therefore my message to all\nparticipants is work out your academic salvation with diligence\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Literary Conference tried to delve into the\nnarrative in the backdrop rampant globalization and \u201cpost-truth\u201d scenario which\nhave further impacted the outlook and methodology of literature. The present\nscenario identified multiple concerns in literature, produced in a m\u00e9lange of\nstyles, and the diversity is only growing with each passing day.
