Nearly 140 undergraduate students from 20 universities and colleges from around the country participated in the two-day event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reservation, the third gender in the Mahabharata, the\ncontroversy and the history over Sanjay Leela Bhansali\u2019s film <em>Padmavati<\/em>, the back-story of the legend\nof Padmini, ethnic differences in Bhutan, climate change, urbanisation and\nmigration in India, gender and the new economy, were some of the topics\nstudents presented on, often begetting pointed critiques, bouquets, occasional\nbrickbats, over two action-packed days. Student photo exhibitions and poster\nsessions concluded the conference.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the commencement of the Undergraduate Research Conference, <strong>Professor (Dr) C Raj Kumar,<\/strong> Vice Chancellor of O P Jindal Global University underlined the need for a multi-pronged effort to transform education in India. \u201cHumanities education has been undergoing a crisis in India and is reflective of the gap between a developed and developing country. It is incumbent upon institutions to provide quality education in order to harness the demographic advantages of a young India into a demographic dividend.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr Indira Parikh<\/strong>, founding president of Flame University in\nPune, was the keynote speaker and emphasised that students undertake an\neducational journey that makes them aware of the \u201cwider context of social and\ncultural filters\u201d that influence a society. \u201cToo often, students in India get\nthe British viewpoint but not the Indian one, a job of good research is to be aware\nof one\u2019s own prejudices,\u201d she said. She encouraged students to fearlessly and\npassionately get into research. \u201cNothing in research is a loss,\u201d she said. She\nurged students and the academic community to \u201ctemper research with being a\nhuman and with emotion.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her remarks on the initiative of undergraduate research, <strong>Dr\nSharon Carnahan<\/strong>, Executive Director of Rollins College, Florida, spoke\nabout the potential of \u201cundergraduate research as a means of finding meaning in\nlife.\u201d She quoted ancient Greek philosopher Socrates saying \u201cthe secret of\nchange is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building\nthe new.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In concluding remarks, <strong>Kathleen Modrowski<\/strong>, Dean, Jindal\nSchool of Liberal Arts &amp; Humanities, the host of the event, said \u201cthe\nUndergraduate Research Conference performed a very important role in that it\nhighlighted the intelligence, courage and creativity of undergraduate students.\nOn a personal note, it reaffirmed why I teach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About JSLH (Jindal School of Liberal Arts and\nHumanities):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated in Sonepat, a state-of-the-art 80-acre residential\ncampus with unique international collaboration with Rollins College, USA; JSLH\nprovides a truly interdisciplinary engagement with world class faculty and global\nexposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JSLH offres an extensive library with over 50,000 volumes and electronic\ndatabases with fully wireless campus with high-tech classrooms and halls of\nresidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JSLH incorporates a capacious variety of arts and humanities\nsubjects as well as foundational Indian teachings in a unique B.A. (Hons.)\nprogramme.
