{"id":1227,"date":"2017-04-13T09:59:22","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T09:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jgu.edu.in\/blog\/?p=1227"},"modified":"2019-11-07T08:47:55","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T08:47:55","slug":"jgu-partners-with-british-council-in-empowering-women-in-social-enterprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jgu.edu.in\/blog\/2017\/04\/13\/jgu-partners-with-british-council-in-empowering-women-in-social-enterprise\/","title":{"rendered":"JGU Partners with British Council in Empowering Women in Social Enterprise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>13th April, 2017 New Delhi: <\/strong><strong>Jindal\nGlobal University\u2019s Centre for Social Innovation &amp; Entrepreneurship (JSiE<\/strong>) and NDIM deliberated upon how social\nenterprises can be the driving engine for empowering women in India in an event\nheld at the New Delhi Institute of Management (NDIM) on 7th April. Key\nparticipants were women and men from civil society organisations and social\nenterprises, as well as academics and policy experts working on these themes in\ndifferent countries.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event is a\npart of ongoing partnership of Jindal Global University\u2019s social innovation\ninitiative <strong>Jindal Centre for Social Innovation &amp; Entrepreneurship <\/strong>and\nBritish Council to conduct a five country research project on social enterprise\nand women empowerment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British\nCouncil, which works extensively to promote social enterprise around 28\ncountries in the world, co-hosted this dialogue on Women\u2019s Empowerment \u2014and how\nwomen can drive the development of the social enterprise. According to a study\nby the British Council, 24% of social enterprises in India are women-led, in\ncontrast to 8.9% of conventional firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sameer\nChaturvedi<\/strong>, who heads\nSocial Enterprise portfolio of British Council in India, said that \u201cgender\nequality is a crucial strand for British Council\u2019s work in India and our work\nin social enterprise complements it through research, capacity building and\npolicy engagement\u201d.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delhi is the\nfinal location from among ten locations in India where dialogues have been held\nduring March and April. These dialogs form part of a larger research project\ncarried out by the British Council on Social Enterprise and Women\u2019s Empowerment\nacross five countries \u2013 India, US, UK, Brazil and Pakistan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jeremy Wade<\/strong>, who leads the Jindal Centre for Social\nInnovation &amp; Entrepreneurship, said that \u201cEveryone wins when we have more\nsocial enterprises led by women. We hope this research will deepen our\nunderstanding of how best to support women in social enterprise across India\nand the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key outcomes\nfrom the dialogue were that there is a strong case for: (1) having role models\nand mentorship platforms for social enterprises with a focus on women\u2019s\nempowerment and (2) governmental policies that recognise social enterprises as\na unique legal entity and incentivise their founders, including women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to\nProf. Teena Singh, Registrar NDIM&nbsp;\u201cIt was a great confluence of all\nstakeholders representing the social sector with deliberations aimed at\nupliftment of women entrepreneurs in the social sector promoting social\nentrepreneurship in Women graduates from MBA Colleges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research\nwill utilise the knowledge of experts in each country to understand the\ndifferent types of social enterprise activity, and the different challenges\nfacing women and girls. It will provide information and recommendations for\npolicy-makers, networks, funders and support providers.
