JGU SECURES TOP RANK IN SWACHH CAMPUS RANKING 2019 FOR 3RD YEAR IN A ROW

This is the third time in a row that JGU has been conferred with this award.JGU was awarded the 1st and the 2nd position on the Swachh Campus Rankings in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

These awards were given away at an impressive function by the Secretary, Higher Education Department, Mr. R. Subrahmanyam in New Delhi on 3rd December 2019.

In all, 6900 higher educational institutions applied for this award in 2019 of whom, 140 were shortlisted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for inspection, after a detailed scrutiny and a rigorous process.

The 3rd Swachh Campus Award process was undertaken by the Ministry of Human Resource Development as a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission of Government of India to promote environmental hygiene in the Higher Education System and beyond. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said, “The ranking system was based on various parameters of hygiene like student-toilet ratio, hostel hygiene, hostel kitchen hygiene, availability of water, water conservation measures, campus greenery, administrative responsibility for hygiene etc. has been formulated by the Ministry to generate peer pressure amongst educational institutions to improve their level of campus hygiene and also take up off-campus hygiene activity in nearby villages/surrounding areas.”

Dec 4, 2019: O.P. Jindal Global University has been awarded the 2nd rank in the Swachh Campus Ranking 2019. It obtained this rank in the Residential Universities category.

The founding Chancellor, O.P. Jindal Global University, Mr. Naveen Jindal said, “I am personally delighted at this unique recognition and honour. We had been striving to maintain world class standards at JGU and implemented various best practices in waste management and other areas. The Founding Vice Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University, Prof. (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar said, “This is an outstanding honour for the University to receive the award for the 3rd time in a row. This recognition motivates us to achieve greater standards in swachhata. We have undertaken a series of measures to ensure that we foster a sustainable and enriched environment in which students and faculty are closely involved. I congratulate JGU on an exceptional achievement especially in view of the tough competition and stringent prerequisites essential to be selected for the award.”

Prof (Dr.) Y.S.R Murthy, Registrar, who received the award on behalf of O.P. Jindal Global University said, “Educational institutions have a great role in the protection of our environment and in sustainable development. As a fully residential campus with more than 5000 students, we are fully committed to the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene on the campus. JGU has taken innovative and pioneering steps to ensure hygiene, cleanliness, waste management, recycling, energy conservation, water management, preservation and enhancement of green cover.”

Nearly 57% of the JGU campus is under green cover including a 50 metres green belt on the periphery of the campus. As a result, JGU’s campus is host to a wide variety of species of flora and fauna. With over 7500 dustbins across the campus, a twin-bin policy has been implemented for garbage segregation. Segregated garbage is collected by the Municipal Corporation of Sonipat. Green waste is converted into vermicompost for further horticulture use. Sewage water is treated in our sewage treatment plant and the treated water is used for irrigation and cooling tower in HVAC usage. In order to reduce our dependence on ground water, 34 rainwater harvesting chambers have been constructed to recharge ground water level.

O.P. Jindal Global university also works with more than 10 villages in its vicinity and has carried out Swachhata Campaigns to make them self-sustainable. These villages include Chhatera, Jagdishpur, Garhibala, Rathdhana, Rohat, Badh Khalsa, Bahalgarh, Nahara, Khanpur and Rai in the Sonipat District of Haryana. Consequently, several villages have become open defecation free. JGU is now extending its Swachhta campaign to 15 more villages thereby contributing to community development and empowerment.

Team of faculty, staff and students visit these areas to carry out several cleaning activities which include, among others, cleanliness drives in the vicinity; removal of any accumulated/ stagnated water; distribution of dustbins and other hygiene products; educating residents on the benefits of personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness; educating residents on open defecation and creating awareness about female hygiene and distribution of female hygiene products.

Senior Economic Adviser, Ministry of HRD, Mr. V.L.V.S.S. Subba Rao, the Chairman UGC, Professor D.P Singh; Chairman, AICTE, Shri Anil Sahsrabudhe; Joint Secretary, Ministry of HRD, Mrs. Neeta Prasad, Chief Innovation Officer (CIO), Dr Abhay Jere were also present on the occasion.
