Congratulating the team, JGU, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. C Raj Kumar, said, “This extraordinary achievement of the students of Jindal Global Law School in winning the second prize in the International Commercial Arbitration moot court held in Vienna is as much a victory for India as it is a victory for JGU. It has demonstrated the outstanding abilities of Indian law students to compete internationally and excel in these mooting and advocacy programmes. The global legal education offered by JGLS is a testimony to the institutional vision and interdisciplinary curriculum; hard work and passionate commitment of the students and the competence and dedication of the faculty members.”

The Willem C Vis Moot is widely regarded as the world pre-eminent arbitration moot competition. Held annually in Vienna, it brings together the global arbitration community around issues concerning the laws of international arbitration and The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).

The competition has been held annually in Vienna, Austria since 1994 and is named after Willem Cornelis Vis, a world-recognized expert in international commercial transactions and dispute settlement procedures. The championship has also spurred the creation of more than twenty pre-moots each year.

This year the international competition witnessed participation of over 330 teams from across the world, thereby making it the single largest moot event in the world.

Shaun Star, Assistant Professor, JGLS and faculty coach for the mooting team, said, “Full credit must go to the students who have worked tirelessly in the lead up to the mooting rounds. While it is truly a remarkable achievement to reach the finals ahead of more than 330 other universities from around the world, the real reward for our students is the learning experience from succeeding in one of the world’s greatest mooting competitions. This recent success is yet another example of how our students and faculty are indeed world class.”

Director of Mooting and Assistant Professor, Faiz Tajuddin, said, “This performance is just one step in our endeavour at Jindal to establish a moot court culture based on professionalism, excellence and mutual respect. Students from both the three and five-year programs work together and learn to rely upon one another, and institutional support allows these teams to engage in a number of pre-moot preparatory events, both national and international. This win on the world stage stands as a marker and will encourage even greater engagement in the core law school activity of mooting in times to come.”

In the past, JGLS students have also won laurels at the Oxford Media Law Moot Court Competition, Herbert Smith Freehills Moot Court Competition, Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, ULC Bangalore Moot, 10th Nani Palkhiwala Tax Moot Court Competition to name a few.

Established in 2009, JGLS is the first school of O.P. Jindal Global university, a non-profit global university. The school harbours a vibrant mooting culture and imparts a rigorous and multi-disciplinary legal education with a view of producing world-class legal professionals, scholars, leaders and public servants. The School’s expert faculty comes from across the globe and engages in critical scholarship that contributes to public debates both in India and abroad.

JGLS has also entered into collaborations, exchange programmes, and research partnerships with elite universities and institutions from across the globe.
