The death of Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo on July 13, while serving a long and harsh prison sentence in China, is a tragic loss for democracy and freedom.


Notwithstanding his celebrity status as the foremost human rights advocate of China, and in spite of appeals to release him on humanitarian grounds, Liu died of liver cancer that was made public by the Chinese government only at a terminal stage when it was too late to save him.

The soulless and merciless system of the Chinese Communist Party, which Liu resisted nonviolently, ultimately swallowed him into its maw. Although he spoke truth to power with rare courage, the power crushed ..
